I am q long time lover of British pipes. Over the years I have had Dunhills, Ferndowns, Ashtons, Northern Briar, Chris Askwith, and now an Askwith on the way. I am wondering what you guys and gals think are just have brands for British pipe lovers collection. I have had to shave my collection down and currently only have 6 Ferndowns, 1 Askwith, 1 James Upshall on the way, 1 Tillshead on the way, and an Ashton in the works. I feel I should buy a Dunhill again if I find the right one. I really only like two shapes, large bent bulldogs and large bent billiards, so it's hard finding them in all brands.

My British holdings are limited. My Ferndown is my English jewel. The others are a Parker, a Britannia, and a Ben Wade. All are dependable good smokers, but the Britannia is the surprise among the "lesser three," for being above quality for price. It's a double bore, but passes a cleaner through both airways, has a nice oval shank (it's a bent Dublin) and is unusually good at a moderate price.

I'm an unabashed Barling fan. That's my #1. I'm also fond of Sasieni, Comoy, and Charatan. And I need to try out some Pre-War BBB's and GBD's, one of these days. Ehrlich was a Boston tobbaconist, so I'm not sure that they quite fit the definition of a British manufacturer. Let's not forget Loewe, who claims to have introduced fine Briars to the Brits in 1856 when he set up shop in the Haymarket. Other fine pipes were made by Civic, City de Luxe, Merchant Service, and Weingott. And, last but not least, Leeds made Ben Wades.

I have all the usual suspects but my hands down favourites are a Haymarket era Loewe and a family era Weingott. Both these smoke better than my Charatans, Barlings, Dunhills etc.
One of my most smoked pipe however is a Bewlay Canadian, simply because it cost a fiver and smokes superbly.

I love my old Comoys and Dunhill's. If you like big bent billiards, Charatans made some excellent bent billiards. I have a 211 from the 1960s, it's a Special and it is a great pipe.

Barling, BBB, Charatan, Dunhill, Loewe & Sasieni. I believe Brian Levine pegged them as the "Big Six" on the PMRS.
Tell you something though, over here in South Africa, where the pickings are slim, there is a line of pipes called Sashar stamped as being "BY SASIENI". They are apparently seconds sent to 'the colonies' for sale to the unsophisticated masses. No matter. I now have four, all fantastic smokers! When I see one, I snap it up, and best of all they can be had for a song. And I'm talking under 20$ here.
Thanks, Joel!

I own five Parkers. Most were produced before 1950. I'm smoking a turn of the century (1900's) at the moment. All of them are great pipes.

Oops... I made a mistake. I do have 5 Parkers, but what I thought I was smoking was NOT a turn of the century Parker, it was a turn of the century WDC. I'm sorry for the misinformation. It's late and I'm tired. My apologies.

I really like a straight English billiard. I have a a '61 Dunhill, a Ferndown, GBD, and a couple of Falcons and Tinderbox Uniques. I am impressed by how easy the English pipes smoke. My Dunhill and GBD almost smoke themselves (both straight biliards). I would really like to acquire an Ashton. It seems like Dunhill, Ferndown, and Ashton make a good basic representation of very good English pipes. They demand a premium price. However, my Falcons, Uniques, and GBD were all inexpensive and are great smokes.

I have a pre-trans Barling, a 4-dot Sasieni, a Pre-WWII Charatan, a Hardcastle, an Upshall, but honestly a Charatan second I purchased back in the '60s is the finest smoker I have.
Bill Taylor Ashtons are my go-to pipe, but fast coming on Bill's heels is Ian Walker's Northern Briars. Great pipes and good prices.

Barling and Charatan. Have several Charatan seconds(Tinderbox Unique) as well, all great pipes. Also if anybody has a Charatan Cutty kicking around they want to unload on me I'll cover shipping...
