Try some different blends and see if you can narrow it down to a genre or three. Then sample tobaccos within the genre(s) you prefer. Seems like most people start out with Aromatics or English blends. Perhaps you should go ahead and get that out of the way so you can eventually evolve to Va and Va Oriental blends and appreciate them appropriately.

how do you know unless you start trying pure examples of these?

There are two types of pipe smokers. Those that dislike latakia and those that enjoy a good tire fire. nana

Actually, the right amount of latakia brings balance to a good blend.

There's so much that goes into processing and blending that it can be overwhelming and difficult to tell what's what.
