"The Proposition" with Guy Pearce, Ray Winstone, Emily Watson, and others you'll recognize. John Hurt makes a kick-ass appearance as the philosopher/bounty hunter Jellon Lamb. It's a little slow at times, but very cerebral Western set in Australia.

Many great westerns have already been mention and several have listed Tombstone, Val Kilmer was amazing as Doc Holliday. Anything with John Wayne would be on my list as well as Lonesome Dove and Open Range. Now I'm not sure this is a true western because of the time period but "Last of the Mohicans" IMO is pretty special as well.

Huge John Wayne fan. For comedy kinda western North to Alaska is good. Also one of his older movies Angel and the bad man. Also non western John Wayne that gets overlooked is Hitari. Rounding up animals for a zoo.
