I have a Millville with almost the identical shape and grain, but it's a straight and the bowl on this pipe is canted in reverse, a Dublin Pot. It's one of my top two pipes.

Glad you got it Owen. I was looking for it,but unsure about the stem. Yes, Charatan DNA.

This one confused me too when I saw it on ebay. It does look like a Barry Jones one whether from Charatan or Upshall.

I did notice the 'Made by Hand' stamp on the reverse of the shank looks very similar if not identical to the Upshall one.

Is the front part ....St Andrews stamped or engraved?

I love the shape and, of course, the grain!

The curious thing is why an orific bit? Back in the 1920's, Charatan pipe were generally small and classically shaped. This looks like a Charatan from 20 or more years later.

I think that the mouthpiece here is originally from another pipe as the curve would be a little more pronounced for this shape.

That makes perfect sense. The circumference of the stem isn't the same as the shank, either.

This is a photo of the 'MADE BY HAND' used at James Upshall. I think it does look quite similar although I am no stamp specialist.

Thanks for all your input guys.

Ken the writing looks to be engraved, apart from the Made by hand which looks very much like your photo above. Despite my photos the stem is a very good fit so maybe a deliberate replacement, but the orific button which somebody must have chosen is strange.

If the 'Old Course...' is engraved, it could well be made by Upshall. I will ask Barry about this one when I next speak with him on the 'phone. Lovely shape and lovely grain!

Ken does Barry realise the esteem he is held in by pipe people?
