I've recently discovered the Danish pipe maker P Holtorp and I like a lot of his designs, particularly his freehand style. I picked up an estate Pear that I thought was quite unique and cool (smokes damn good too).
Now, despite having a page on pipedia.org, I can't seem to find Mr.Holtorps first name anywhere!

Unless his first name is just "P"...
Anyone have a clue?

A good question, I've never been able to find an answer myself. Some very nice old Danish hand made pipes though...

Here are two I have, that I believe are from the early 1960's.

I read that our mystery man had worked alongside Tom Eltang so I emailed Tom..

He said he doesn't know!
I suppose just because they worked in and around Pipe Dan doesn't mean they were acquainted.

P. Holtorp was one of the many artisanal carvers who worked in the periphery of Pipe-Dan. In the 1960's - maybe up to the early 1970's - he was one of the in-house pipemakers working together with Sven Knudsen, Gert Holbek, Axel Svend Celius, Tom Eltang - just to name a few. Later he worked from his own shop but still sold most of his pipes via Pipe-Dan.
Another Holtorp pipe, what I always have found interesting about this one, in regard to the above, is its similarity to Sven Knudsen's shape 41 for W.O. Larsen, the sandblast below.

I spent a few minutes looking yesterday and I couldn't find a first name.
Dave that smooth Holtorp pot(?) is awesome -- always a pleasure to see that one. Is it designed as a sitter?

I'll post up a picture of mine a little later.

Maybe Teddy Knudsen or Celius would know..

Or maybe we could get Brian Levine and his enexhaustable stable of pipe networks to do some digging.
Edit: I sent a message to the radio shows fb page.

Svend Axel Celius has long passed away. It's unfortunate when some of pipe making's history gets lost to time...

That "nosewarmer" shape seems to be one Holtorp liked. An example made for PipeDan sometime in the 1960's (not mine),

Bumped into this thread during my own search on the pipes from Holtorp.

Holtorp's first name was Per, a.k.a. Pipe-Per, and was a very good friend of my father in law.

I can't give anymore information, because my father in law died a few years ago.
The picture attached is my collection of pipes made by Holtorp, and the one on the right, is made specifically for my father in law.

bamklausdk, thank you! You just solved a mystery that I have wondered about for several years, Per Holtorp.

Wow hey yeah!

Thanks a lot bamklausdk!

Those are some lovely and wild pipes.

I'd love to find one of those pipe socks one day.

The "Danish" style in general remains my favorite of all types! I almost always sit while smoking.
