When I did smoke cigarettes, I smoked roll your owns. I smoked Drum for years. When taxes made me rethink buying Drum I switched to some of the pipe tobacco products being sold to cig smokers for RYO.

I wasn't ever happy with the change, but...I have a Nicotine desire.

I was in a grocery store at the Cusotmer Service counter where they sell cigarettes, lottery tickets and make refunds, and glanced that the Lucky's on the shelf....I think they were $8.55? something ridiculous like that!

Remember when they were a quarter?

LOL... That's CHEAP! Cigarettes here go for an average of $11.25!
I'm 68 but I only remember paying about 40 cents +- a pack. Then again, it would seem we're talking about two entirely different tax structures from where you and I live.

I remember 35 cents a pack. And for those of you worrying about pipe blends, do not worry, the tax folks will catch us up in the near future.
PS: Most especially if we keep bringing the disparity to their attention.

I remember buying a 10 can roll of Kodiak for $11. Now a 5 can roll is over $20. 8O

Here in Vegas the casinos have vending machines for them and they usually charge about $3 more per pack than you usually find them at gas stations. Very glad I've never gotten into that nasty habit of cigarettes. Tried one when I was in high school and hated it. I did enjoy Black&Milds though.

I have been walking myself backwards down the path of my travels through the world of mouth tobacco in an effort to quit. Now I am back where I started: Days Work and pouches of chewing leaf. When I last bought Southern Pride and Durango (the cheap end of the spectrum), the pouches ran about $1.50. The cheapest is now $3.50. I was shocked to see Red Man at nearly $6.00 a pouch.

Australian prices are something like $25 here, which works out to be around $20 US.
That's 1/3 the price of an average pouch of pipe tobacco.

In remember a time in Vegas when a pack of cigarettes was free at the 21 table. Of course the pit bosses also gave you comp tickets for meals.
You still get free drinks in casinos in Vegas if you're playing games. It is customary to tip the cocktail waitress though and by that I don't mean giving her your number. The drink is free, the service of that adorable waitress bringing it to you will cost about a dollar or two. If you win big it's customary to give her a more size-able tip. A buddy of my hit $800 on video poker and gave the waitress $50.

There was a Dairy Queen down the road from me that had a cigarette vending machine right next to the bubble gum machines. My friends and I would search the couches at our homes for quarters, ride our bikes to the DQ, pull the slot out, drop in two quarters side by side, and ride off with a pack of Luckys or Chesterfields. But, of course we could walk into any store and buy them, because there was no age limit. But, all of the arcades and restaurants had the vending machines, which were just a tad cheaper. Sometimes the arcades would even take tokens, which you substitute in washers, ha ha.
I did the RYO stuff too just before I quit. I had budgeted in over $300 a month, so that has remained my budget for pipe tobacco, which makes it very easy to build a cellar.

I wonder what they charge factories for dumping tons of smoke into the atmosphere? I will confess, however, the increase of cig prices to over $7 a pack gave me an extra incentive to quit, and in turn discover the pipe again.

Somewhere in the mid-sixties it was 25 cents a pack in the cigarette machine in the dorm basement. Then they added Masterpiece cigarettes which were all of 35 cents because they were made with expensive "pipe" tobacco. Maybe that extra dime was why they didn't last for long.

Cigarettes taste like my rear end(not that I would know), and are so destructive to your body. I'm happy with my pipe tobacco and cigars.

You've just not smoke premium cigarettes. But, I and you digress even further than we already have digressed from the OP. Now we're discussing the "good old days" and who here has the best, least demented, memory of 50's and 60's. I believe free in Vegas is the best price so far.

If that's the market price and you smoke I suppose you pay the price. I pay $62.00 for a carton of 5. It's just the way things are. My choice, so I pay, enjoy and don't complain. I suppose I could quit, I might, but I can pay the price and so, can enjoy watching my moneys wafting gently towards the ceiling or sky with no guilt or stress.
It's a situation similar to the water crises in California, if you've got the money, you've got the water. Pay the fine and water the shrubs. If the State of California really wants to conserve water make the fine substantial, not the paltry $100.00 or whatever it is for a violation. Something akin to $10,000.00 per gallon illegally used. That'll get their attention in Rancho Santa Fe. Of course then the State has to find a way to finance the prosecutions.
Smoking is a choice, like golf, you gotta pay to play. Life's little pleasures often cost money to enjoy. A nice, expensive cut of beef is often more enjoyable than a "Big Mac." Sometimes a bottle of "Boone's Farm" is just the ticket as opposed to that expensive red on the other side of the store. It's all choices and what we can afford.
For many people, money does indeed buy happiness. Others find their happiness in other ways.
