So Here's a Newb Type Question...

When you get towards the bottom of a bowl, do you stir it up to get to everything, or is keeping that top layer of ash important for some scientific purpose?

I don't stir, simply because I occasionally get a bit of a bitter taste when I do that.

I don't stir but often gently loosen up the ash on top and dump it out without disturbing the cherry.

If I need to relight, I pick the white ashes loose then dump before I tamp it all flat. Otherwise if I'm still lit near the end, I try to tamp the edges into a little cone and smoke the dottle.

If it’s folded and stuffed Flake, it’s sometimes helpful at around 1/3 bowl level to dump ash as described, then scrape the sides, stir up a bit, lightly tamp and then relight

Stir it up and it starts to taste burnt and you'll have a large chance of inhaling Ash..hence the burnt part. No bueno!

Never found the need to "stir". Not even sure what you mean. I light/relight the pipe when necessary and simply enjoy until the tobacco is ash or dottle.

I do both depending on the day. If it's a lot of ash, I'll dump it. If it's a little, I'll stir it and relight.

I prefer not to dump ash. However on occasions, the tobacco at the bottom of the bowl will not take fire, I am still not satiated, and there is a lot of unburnt tobacco, then so dump ash

I agree with this statement, that's another benefit to filters!

I'll occasionally do the "bump & dump". I'll bump the bottom of my pipe twice on the edge of my ashtray to loosen any excess ash and the dump it in the ash tray. Tamp, relight and off I go to the bottom of the bowl.

I only stir and relight if I'm smoking a Falcon pipe. No chance of getting any ash or other gunk down the stem.
