Those tins are for some SERIOUS tin collector for sure. They are definitely rare but a bit overpriced IMO. I have catalogs for pricing vintage tins and there are special tin auctions that take place during the year that would amaze any non collector at the prices realized.

I have been collecting tins for over 30 years and have many that are still unopened in mint condition. Here's a couple photos unopened full tins.

Doc is that Erinmore Flake tin copper? Wow.
The prices of the tins in the pics Al posted are high but are probably there to allow a serious negotiating margin. I have been looking at tins a while and have yet to pay much for a tin. I have near fainted at the asking prices of some tins I have come across. I have also been told by many vendors that the prices some vendors ask for are just rubbish, especially when they probably got it for free or close to it. As with everything, rarity and condition drive prices. But when I see a tin in a store for several hundred and then see it on the bay for fifty, I rarely open my wallet unless they are willing to wheel and deal. For me haggling in person is half the fun, the other half is the hunt.
I would love to see more pics if you guys have them.

I don't have anything too fancy but I got this along with a Garfinkel Canadian online.

Garfinkel for sure imported from Sobranie and from McConnell back in the day. The Sobranie stuff included the various Orient Express blends, and the McConnell stuff included some oriental blends called Shottery, Marlowe, and Armond. Good stuff. I wonder who made that New World Aromatic mix?

Doc, that Charlie Rich tin is interesting as hell, a rare bird I'd imagine!
Al, it really is amazing the prices some of the old tins fetch, the craziest example I've come across is an old rare Ty Cobb tin that sold for $32,863

http://www.legendaryauctions.com/LotDetail.aspx?inventoryid=154322
This 2012 auction had a $40,000 estimate, but it only pulled 30, the listing has a great write up about the tin,

http://www.robertedwardauctions.com/auction/2012_preview/2.html
I've had fairly good luck getting some old tins, I must limit myself to only buying tins with tobacco still in them though, otherwise I'd go broke collecting old tins because so many of them all appeal to me.

Well, in some cases it is just the tin, just recently I bought this PJ Carroll tin just for the tin, because it's so rare, they were one of the last great Irish tobacco houses, famous for Mick McQuaid,

http://pipesmagazine.com/forums/topic/pj-carroll-dundalk-ireland-tobacco-co-mick-mcquaid-gtimage-heavy

...I had never seen that tin before and I reckon it's late production right before they went out of business, I have no concern that the baccy may be too dried out or unsmokeable, but I am curious if it's just a "normal" aro or a cool oddly flavored true Irish stout kind of thing, I hope it still has an aroma!

It was a little pricey, but I could not resist it!
The same seller has a rare Japanese tin still up for grabs,

the Momoyama stuff I've seen sell for big $$$ and this is by the same maker,

12e + 9e shipping = roughly $30, pricey for just a curiosity, but pretty cool...

In regard to that Taxi tin you posted,

here's one that sold for $3,200 + ($784.00) buyer's premium + taxes, fees

For some reason The Aussie collectors seem to pay a lot,

I've never seen one of the old Squadron Leader tins go for this much...

Today, at a flea market, I found this Dunhill Early Morning Pipe cutter tin. The label is in pretty good shape. The US tax sticker for the 4 oz tin says "Act of 1926". Any idea on how old it might be?

Al - that's a beautiful tin! Good score there.
The tax seal has a picture of John Q. Adams, and a series number.

If the series number is intact and you can read it, I think you can date it with this index:

http://cycleback.com/packdate.html
Although I'm not completely sure, because the cigarette stamp is different, with a pic of De Witt Clinton, as well as Henry Clay for cigars, and Charles Foster for chewing tobacco - but I think the series date should be all the same regardless of whose head is pictured?
The excise tax stamps were ended in 1959.
Surprisingly, it's rather difficult to find a definitive article on the topic, I'd appreciate any links suchwise about the old excise stamps.

Thanks MLC. The tin was a cool $7 bucks! I can't read the sticker info with my naked eye, but I'll check using a magnifying loupe this evening. Great info, as always!

I forgot to check my sticker:

It is an Adams picture with Series 123, so this applies, right?

A lot of really great tins posted here.
My collection is nothing but commons, I can't afford to buy some of the nicer and rarer ones. I can admire them from afar though.
Here are mine on a shelf I made from fence pickets. The top two jars are blends I didn't care for so I blended them together and gave them names.
