I recently received a Gianni pipe from Caminetto's Gianni Devoli, something this carver produced as

a separate line from the shop in Milan. It must have been living in the pipe shop in The Netherlands

where it was purchased for a long time. The briar is very light weight, so is probably aged a long time.

It's a smooth, small Group 4 bent billiard.

Thanks, petes03. Really does remind me of volcanic rock. I'm not sure if I paid a good price, but I rarely see briar (other than a few exceptional freehands) that I love this much.
Edit: Item no. 121161132926 on eBay is a closed auction of a Caminetto "New Dear" shape 115. Sold for $342 with 22 bids-- holey moley! I think I'll hang onto mine.

Does anybody know anything about dating Ascorti-Radice Caminettos, falling in the 68/69-to-80 range? I remember reading somewhere that pipes in the very early years, up until maybe '72 or so, had something different in the stamping, but I can't seem to find that information now.
Mine, pictured above, has the straight (rather than italic)

”Caminetto„

NEW DEAR 115 (shape number)
Rear has

ASCORTI

RADICE

CUGGIAGO

CANTÚ-ITALY

(and the Tinder Box shield)

This 1987 is one of my absolute favorite pipes -- and a terrific smoke. It's also the only smooth Caminetto I have ever seen.

On one hand, I'm usually not a fan of that shape (the gavel-like bent). On the other hand, that one looks pretty neat. It has a very formal fibe about it.

Self-present in 1974 for submitting my dissertation. Given the provenance of the pipe, there is a good likelihood it was made by Luigi himself.

My Caminetto collection is starting to take shape with two mew additions. I also bought a Caminetto Christmas pipe which I returned cause It was too expensive I paid too much for it and I didn't see my self smoking it. But here are the four I got now. Love them.

I've always considered Caminetto Pipes to be one of the best pipes made anywhere. I haven't checked on new ones lately but back when I acquired mine, they were really among the top tier pipes from Italy.

I think they smoke as well as any other top brand and they do have their own look and personality. I would not sell or trade off the four I currently own for anything. They have proven to be excellent pipes. I just wish I could figure out the numbering system they use to grade them. Here are photos of mine.

@maxpeters, those are righteous pipes, I particularly like the bulldog! I haven't followed the the new caminetto grading system, so I can't be of any help there (I say new, mine are all from the '70s and there really wasn't a grading system then). I also agree with you regarding the way they smoke.

I have this Caminetto smooth bent Dublin (from the late '70s) and am wondering if anyone has heard of a silver moustache ever being stamped in Caminetto stems? I always thought the so-called "double-comma" moustache was first gold, and later white. I swear this one looks silver to me... maybe it's faded a bit over the years, or maybe I'm just subconsciously trying to start a conspircy theory!
Also, the pipe isn't stamped with a shape or line name, just "Caminetto" (script) on the left shank, the standard "HAND MADE IN ITALY" and 'CUCCIAGO(Co') on the right shank. Smooth Caminettos were rare back then and, I thought, were mostly associated with the Prestige series pipes, but those I've seen always have a name like "Excellence", "Moustache", "Sable d'Or", etc. This one just seems odd to me. Have any of you Caminetto cognoscenti run across this before?

Unfortunately, my Caminetto "New Dear" 115 just vanished one day. I never found it. I suspect I forgot it was in my jacket pocket, and it somehow fell out.
I keep checking eBay in case someone sells it. I really wish I could replace it with another of the same shape and finish. I dearly loved it.
