I'm just breaking in my new Tortuga smooth 305 and I'm surprised how much I like this shape. So much so, I just bought a Venere smooth 305.
All I have now are Savinelli's and I've primarily stuck to the 315 KS shape, which I love, but I decided to branch out a bit and I'm glad I did.
I'm sticking to the wide shallow bowl shapes though, which is my preferred smoke. I've got a 316 on the way as well. :)

Do you use the balsa filter captain? I've heard they don't affect flavours at all.
I used to like my 9mm filter pipes,Big Bens etc but then found it was strangling the flavours so much, I went back to my 'straight throughs'.
I am leaning to the Savenelli range, as I mention in the other thread.

Just had a look online at the Tortuga smooth 305. A mighty nice pipe! Now I've got my eye on one as I am a Savinelli fan!!

I never used to, but I do now. They're really nothing more than moisture absorbers (steam), which helps eliminate any tongue bite. They don't affect the taste at all.

Ok, so I got the Tortuga rusticated as well as the smooth, but then I decided to upgrade/replace that with a Punto Oro Gold. It's an absolutely beautiful pipe in hand, maybe my favorite pipe now, not that I have many.
So, I sold the rusticated Tortuga (I can't have too many pipes) :) So, now I have three 305's, the Tortuga smooth, the Venere smooth, and the Punto Oro Gold. I think I have my 305's nailed down now.

That's a great shape. I've never really looked at the 305. My 321 & 623 gold's have hand cut stems and they're great. Enjoy.

I'm convinced that the 305 has the perfect golden ration of depth vs width for a bowl.

They smoke amazingly well, and look awesome, too!

I got a 123 to try out and the added depth of the bowl isn't for me... it lives alone on the shelf now while I smoke my 305 as often as possible.
I'm pretty much dedicated to only smoking the 305 or 320 shapes (which can also be found with a very similar bowl depth to width ratio) at this point (and cobs, of course).

The beauty of the 305 Punto Oro Gold in hand makes me want to buy the 316 also. Must not succumb.

Yes, they're generally considered in the "pot" family. I kind of think they're a dublin/pot hybrid.
I like broad shallow bowls for shorter smokes. It's just my thing I guess. I smoke straight VA flakes (rubbed out) primarily and some English.

Captain, I've seen that shape made by another maker referred to by its online seller as an acorn. The term seems to be applied to what amounts to a rounded Dublin. I have one that resembles that made by some unknown maker. Yours is very attractive.

I feel like my smokes in the 305 actually last a long time. It smokes slow and cool and I noticed I was able to smoke less tobacco for as long or longer than more tobacco in other deeper pipes. Maybe I'm dreaming, but thats how I got turned on to how awesome this ratio of bowl is.
