If you're in the USA this place is great. I've had a couple of stems replaced by Norwood and they are quick and very reasonable. Floyd just repaired an old Charatan of mine.

If you want to try fitting your own stems there are several good suppliers . J.H. Lowe has already been mentioned. I get nearly all my supplies from Pipemakers Emporium :http://www.pipemakers.org/

Most suppliers sell by the dozen. Pimo http://www.pimopipecraft.com/ and J. H. Lowe can fix you up with individual stems.

I've never met Tim although he did some work on for me a while back. Talked with him on the phone a couple of times. He was very nice and very helpful and did a great job on the pipes. I've heard several people say you couldn't ask for a nicer guy and I agree. His price for the work he did for me was very reasonable. If you are close you should go see him.

Where did you break the stem?

If it is the tenon, and depending on how much you want to spend it is possible to fix it your self.
I broke the tenon on an old whitehall canadian a while ago.

The pipe was not worth the ~$30 to send it away, so I fixed it myself.
I got a length of aluminum tubing from a hobby shop and an appropriately sized drill bit, some glue etc.
The finished thing looked like it was meant to be. Many pipes, medico, grabow etc, have aluminum tenons from the factory.
Total cost, about $3 not including the glue, including the glue, about $8.

This includes enough material to fix about 8 more the same way.
Delrin works well this way too. Several high end pipe makers and repairs shops use delrin tenons.
Note that I don't repair pipes professionally, I just have a lot of old junk I fix for myself.
If anybody is interested in more details about how I do this, let me know I will post it.

It is pretty simple but there are some risks.

Tim West does repairs.

Odd. I was just suggested to this fellow, and he's only like twenty minutes from work. Anyone ever meet him?
I've met one of his pipes, and it's a regular in my rotation--the only freehand I've ever liked, as well.
