I’m new in the forums and I’m sure you guys have talked about this already but I couldn’t find any recent posts regarding this.

Now that Mcclelland is gone. What could be a replacement for Red Virginias and Stoved? I’m looking for a good quality not so grassy Virginia

What’s your favorite blend with Red Virginias?

C&D's Oak Alley is my current favorite, though it also has Burley, Katerini and Perique. It's not a substitute for 5100, however.

515 RC was disappointing to me as a 5100 replacement, at least as a straight smoke. Nothing bad about it, but kind of flat to me. 507-S is, to me, very close to 5105. Both will be useful blending components. I got 8 ounces of each, and I will smoke both of them, but as of now 507-S is the only one I would reorder.

Good thread, and good advice when my waning jar of 5100 goes out. Red Virginia isn't of itself a rare commodity, and single leaf and blends that are already sourcing it may step up their quality to fill the gap, or that would be a logical move. I wrote down 515 and 507-S, because online is just pretend to me. You get hacked, or the server changes or the device folds, and it's all just a gone fever dream.

I've been thinking about ordering some Red Stag from McCranies; has anyone tried this? Says it is a straight red virginia.

I haven't tried Red Stag, but I suspect it's just rebranded red Virginia from somewhere else if it's from McCranie's.

That was my initial reaction. But I experimented with the moisture level and the 515 perked up quite a bit. I wound up wiping out the bag and ordered a pound of it. 5100 isn't exactly a flavor powerhouse either, very monochromatic, more of a blending base than something I would smoke on its own. I don't know of any other alternatives if one is looking for a 5100-like Red.

just get any red virginia and spray a brown sugar/vinegar solution until you get the desired sugar/sour combination.
