If you're like me, you love looking at images of various tobaccos. I've only been pipe smoking now for a year and a couple of months so my experience with a variety of different tob'o is limited, it's great being able to see what's beneath the tin lid and perhaps might even steer you to a blend you hadn't considered before.
Looking around alot lately, I've found 2 motherlode threads of beautiful pictures and find myself drooling at times just at the sight of the luscious leaf.
Both these threads are set up with an index on the first page so you can just click a tob'o you're interested in and go straight to it, but I think it's fun (but time killing) to go page by page, here they are:
http://accademiafumolento.forumfree.it/?t=52995175
Some great stuff there, as well as nice photography.
I wonder if there'd be any interest to start a similar thread here on PM?
I'm not a good photographer, but here's a few to kickstart our thread if there's any interest...

You've only been smoking for a year and a couple of months?
Where/how did you come by the Murray's?
The photography's fine, but I think more people will be interested in what you've photographed!

:D yes, I really became passionate very quickly.
The old Erinmore came very cheaply off eBay, cheap as in $5 for 2 full tins!!! They have House of Edgeworth distribution stickers on the back, any idea of a time period?
The Warrior Plug came from a trade with a very cool British gentleman, and along with it and St. Bruno, they have found much love with me but it's frustrating to taste these "forbidden fruits" because they're so hard to come by,

so it's a blessing but also a curse!

How was that Rich Dark Honeydew?
I'd love to give a couple tins of that for a rainy day...

Simenon, sadly the RDH was very crispy and all the essential oils were lost to time, it didn't even have any discernible scent. I rehydrated some with the wet paper-towel technique and it was okay but nothing grand. I ended up mixing it all with a jar of moist Tilbury, about 60/40 and then after a few weeks the RDH actually came through and added a distinct depth to the Tilbury.
I'm glad I got it for cheap, I couldn't imagine spending $50 on a vintage tin, expecting heaven on Earth, only to find out a tiny pinhole or bad seal had destroyed what it once was. I understand why people lay that kind of loot on the old discontinued blends, but it's a total gamble on how the tobacco has been preserved and aged.
On my tin of RDH it had been rusted on the inside and the seal was compromised probably a long time ago, so it certainly wasn't half the tobacco it was when fresh.
Then again, you never really know. I was stunned when I saw this old tin of Sweet Crop that the famous John Loring had dug up somewhere, the cutter-top lid had rusted to the top and he had to open it on the bottom with a can opener!!!

http://www.loringpage.com/attpipes/tobacco-rustedtin.html

"I smoked another bowl last night, and today I started off with it in a 1928 Dunhill 126 Shell that married delightfully with the medium-light matured virginia blend. I don't know what the blend tasted like in 1955 but notwithstanding the packaging it's a wonderful smoke today.
And if you showed me the tin & told me the story, I would swear you were a g-d- liar ..."

Cruel, cruel fate!
I'm sorry to hear that.
I was just discussing the meaning of 'Honeydew' tobaccos with rmbittner last week; apparently, the term indicates a tobacco that has been cased with molasses. (A personal favourite of mine)
The vintage tobacco game is surely hit and miss. I'm 'living for the moment' at the present time but I would be happy to eventually experiment with the legendary old blends.
For now it is much nicer to revel in today's bountiful selection.
When it comes to the old stuff, however, broken seals and rust can break the hardest of hearts.
Thanks for the link! I'd call him a liar, too. I wouldn't even smoke from a container in that condition...

...here's a few more

Old Larus Edgeworth, it wasn't wrapped in cellophane but the tax seal paper strip had not been broken, it still had a strong molasses type smell and it smoked very well --- I must say that Wessex pretty much damn near nailed this taste with their Burley Slice!

This ain't tobacco, but my God man, yes! Dunhill did indeed invent the sandblasted pipe, this one is a 1924 Magnum, from the collection of cumberland
