Hello Pat,
I'm semi-blind too, but as far as I can tell it's a "J" for 1983, but I could be wrong.

It's an I!!! 1983. You will notice a J has not been used in the London marks in the last four centuries!
FANTASTIC looking pipe

It doesn't look like the I, but I guess it has to be? I never knew they didn't use the J. 1983 would syn with that stamped stem logo.

It's no use trying to argue with Dave, Al.
You know he's wiser than both of us...

Thank you all for the info on the pipe and for all your help and kind words.
So the pipe is definitely from 1983 and likely a custom job or a rare piece.
Curiosity satisfied, I'll devote myself to finishing the break-in and thoroughly enjoying my late father's pipe.
To thank you once again I leave you with a final picture.
Cheers,
J

PS: The Amphora tobacco pot was my father's too and was filled with about 10oz of a loose cut, dark and golden blend in a sealed bag. Has a light nic hit but it is full bodied and has a deep leather, chocolote and plumish aroma. I cannot detect any casing in the flavor. It is a very smooth smoke. I revived it by spraying it with some distilled water et voila, it opened up like crazy. It's been aged for around 30 years, for I clearly remember buying the pot (which came filled) with my mother, together with the BC Sweet Chubby in my album, as a father's day present when I was around 10 or 11 years old. Overall, a great smoke although not satisfying nic wise. The bottom of the pot reads:

Original Modell

Zenith-Gouda

A° 1749

Holland
Any ideas?
