Visted a newly opened "old-time" candy store in our local area called Grandpa Joes Candy. They had individually wrapped licorice shaped like pipes - more of a church warden shape. Not into black licorice, but I was curious how they smoked.
I think Harris would say they smoke like a goopy aromatic.

Bethlehem, Pa.
My B&M used to carry them. Many times guys would come in for tobacco and buy a couple of licorice pipes for their kids; or so they said.

SPC has them, and being the licorice nut that I am, it's amazing that I never have bought one.

I used to buy those for the penny candy shop. Almost as much fun as the candy cigarettes.

I haven't seen or thought of those in years, but once I saw the photo, even when I read the reference, they immediately came rushing back. The local independent drugstore had those, as I recall, and also the Ben Franklin five and dime. Also, the drugstore had licorice root -- not a candy but the actual root of the plant, which we would carry in a small bundle wrapped in rubber bands and chew. Aboriginal suburban children.
