I remember those from when I was very young in Hong Kong. Haven't seen on or thought about one for ages. My understanding is that they were used for substances other than tobacco.

That's an old style Chinese opium pipe. I have different versions of them, usually cast in bronze. There are two compartments, one for the opium and a second chamber to allow the smoke to flow through. Nobody uses them in the real world, and the many that you see today are replicas. You have to remember that the originals are from the 1800's.
