February 20 is International Pipe Smoking Day. It's a good time to get together with other pipe smokers and drum up some positive press on pipe smoking. This year our club (PIPE) is sponsoring a small smoking contest. Hopefully, the press will cover it. For more information on IPSD see http://www.ipsd.eu/

Here's my take on International Pipe Smoking Day.
I made it one of the feature articles for February.

Here's a brief article on the St. Louis Pipe Show and International Pipe Smoking Day. They mention the Tobacco Tax Parity Act that we here at PipesMagazine.com informed the world about before anyone knew anything about it.
You can see Steve Monjure in the picture too. Bob and I got awesome Ardor pipes from him in Richmond.
The first comment is from an imbecilic idiot that should be punched in the face and then have some things explained to him.

Pocono Intermountain Pipe Enthusiasts (PIPE) sponsored a pipe smoking contest at El Humidor, Wilkes-Barre, PA to celebrate IPSD on Saturday, February 20. Everyone had the same Savinelli pipe, 2 matches, and 3 grams of Spilman Mixture to smoke. None of the competitors had ever been in a smoking contest before. Times varied from a low of 20 minutes to a high of 51 minutes. The winner won a trophy and a Brebbia. Everyone who participated had a great time.

The longest I ever went without having to re-light, not in a contest, was 25 minutes, but that was an anomaly. Usually, I am 10 - 15 mins.
Hey Doc, one of our members, pstlpkr, has been posting about slow smoking.
Any of your thoughts added to the comments would be great.

I think once I had one go for about 35 minutes. I am like Kevin usually need to relight after about fifteen minutes.

There's a difference between smoking a pipe slowly and a slow smoking contest. For a contest, the tobacco is usually rubbed out more finely. The top layer of tobacco is actually powder. The way the pipe is lit is different as well. There is no faux light. You toast the tobacco with the first match and light just a little of the tobacco on the second. Then you let the pipe smoke itself while you just egg it on a bit hoping and praying that you don't go out. Thus the pipe smoking experience is not as relaxing as when you smoke a pipe slowly for pleasure. The world's record is 3 hours and 30 minutes.

There are the goodies, true enough. I've won more than a few pipes. But competing in the national championship in Chicago and at the Northeast Regional in Peeksill, NY, over the last 5 or 6 years a comraderie grows among the participants and new friends are created.

Not trying to offend doc, I think it would be nice to win a free pipe though.
