Info on This Peterson Please

I picked up this little estate Peterson recently and was wondering if anyone might know how old (or new) it is. It says Peterson's, over System on the left side of the shank and Made in the Repbkic of Ireland with a "31" on the right side. I thought the band was silver but the "hallmarks" lead me I believe it's actually nickel.

Any information will be much appreciated.

Probably not silver, the hallmarks under the K&P are actually a representation of Peterson and are symbols they designed to mark pipes that don't necessarily say Peterson, such as Peterson seconds. I'm not saying yours is a second, it is a very nice Pete, but also newer being made in the Republic of Ireland. The best place to get Pete info is this site.

Great looking pipe Greg.
Now take what I say with a huge grain of salt since I am no Peterson expert, but even though it looks like a new Pete, the "P" in Peterson looks like the old style to me. Being made in the "Republic" means of course that it's newer than 1948, but the "P" makes me wonder if it's an early Republic-era pipe. If so, it's in exceptional shape.

Damn, I'm envious. That's the pipe I really want next. Let us know how it smokes, and if the system works on a straight pipe. It's amazing how much moisture I dump out the trap of my little Peterson system 317 after a smoke.

I'd say the band probably is nickel because the Peterson silver bands have the Irish harp (as a symbol of Ireland), .929 (purity of the silver), and a letter marking of a specific font to denote the year. You can visit Peterson's website for a catalog of year markings.
Definitely looks like their 31 straight billiard system pipe to me.
As for the year I'd go with the above suggestions.
You might want to shoot Jim Liley a line aka Sandpiper. He used to be on this forum I believe and I think he still haunts the International Peterson Pipe Club forums as well as occasional Facebook usage.

I agree it isn't silver ... which was a bit of a bummer since I bought it thinking it was. I don't know (but am learning now) much at all about Peterson's pipes; I only own one, two now, and the first was well and properly documents so I had no questions on it.
It does, indeed, see to be a 31 straight system, the only straight system pipe made it seems. And I got not a single bit of gurgle from her initial smoke, which was far from perfect though; the next morning when I cleaned her out I found that going through the bowl into the draw hole was "the way to go" on this one and opened the draw hole significantly with the pipe cleaner just doing routine cleaning. I hope that the next bowl(s) go much better.
