How to Band a Pipe?

I've searched the forum for a while now and still can't find much on how to band a cracked shank, so can anyone elaborate for me on how to do it. Do I need a banding tool or can it be done by hand, and by the way I plan to do it to my first pipe that was a cheap basket pipe so no worries on the quality of the pipe.

She's not really a good smoker either, the draw hole on the stem is a small round hole at the mouth end. If that was a confusing sentence here is how I would simplify it, I love that pipe it was my first but it draws terrible and has a small thin bowl so I am no longer concerned with ever using it again, I just want to practice on it.
