I have several of both Sav and Stanwell - they both are workhorses and have never had a bad smoke in either brand - just and FYI , if you are looking at the top range of your budget, spending another $20-$25 will get you into some nice Radice hand made ( I have several of these as well all outstanding smokers ).

In my experience, the pipe's brand is much less important that its condition. Just about any brand name pipe, if properly maintained and cleaned, will smoke just fine.
That said, I happen to own a few Danish Stanwells and they are among my favorites, mostly for their nice shapes.

If I were one who felt diminished buying a Stanwell made in Italy (and I own four) I'd shop for the Danish made pipes that are available as estate pipe, some unsmoked, and some still in original stock. You'll pay more, but you'll have the original item. I don't own, and haven't smoked, a Danish made Stanwell, but I find the ones made in Italy good, comparable to Savinelli and the French brands.
