I have tried several different types of "hard wood" and others like pine and oak, but they all seem to burn/scorch too easily, even "iron wood". But ebony has so much silica in it that you have to take a very hot flame to it to affect it in any manner.

Not only that... but when its polished (no wax) it feels great in your hand, very very smooth.
Tanless1 as for turning them out on a lathe... not my style. Besides I don't own one.

About the most sophisticated tool I use on occasion is a Japanese hand saw.

I have some nice hunks of Mesquite from storm damaged trees from when I lived in Arizona I lugged along with me to Iowa. I might try to make a tamper from that for giggles and grins. Let you all know how that turns out.
