I decided I needed another hobby so I thought I would try carving. Here are my first two. Hope i have managed to cut the size down a bit on the pic. The second one would be of no use for a smaller bowl as it is a little wide.

I am guessing the first is cedar. What kind of wood did you use? Were you aiming for a fish tamper?

Actually, I'm so new to this that I have no idea what the wood is. I got it out of a "cutoffs" bargain box at the local wood shop. I know it isn't cedar.
I didn't really shoot for a fish but I didn't want them all to be the same so it's hard to tell how they will turn out over time. Maybe I'll even end up with a whale :P

not bad for a first attempt, you will improve dramatically as everyone does with wood carving. it just takes time.

looks good. you could always put a spent shell casing on the end to keep it from burning.
