I remember taking my daughter to the second Star Wars movie (whatever it's name was) when she was about six. I never saw the first one, or anyone after that as I actually fell asleep. It's not that I don't like science fiction movies but it just left me cold. But, my daughters husband is a total Star Wars geek and is dragging my granddaughter to the first late showing, much to my daughters chagrin, as she had no interest in seeing it. Either way, I hope it does well for all of those who have been eagerly awaiting a new release.

I love it. Kasdan: Ewoks. Lucas:bad writing. It's Star Wars. A kids movie. Next thing, it'll appear on HBO as soft porn, Skipping theaters all together. Somehow fans will have delusions of grandeur; talking themselves into believing it was supposed to be that way from the get go.
Most adults felt the same way you did phil67.
Putting all laughs and geek-Dom aside. I hope it's awesome. I love seeing everyone's opinion on it.

I'm pretty optimistic. On one hand, Disney takes very good care of characters -- look at what they've done with their Marvel acquisition. On the other, you have an entire generation of fans in charge of making sequels of the movies they love. This is different from when the original authors revisited some of these things (remember Indy IV?)
For what it's worth, Kevin Smith implied in a podcast that he saw it a few weeks ago (he's NDAd), and very clearly said this is the movie we were all waiting for. And not just because of the nostalgia factor or fan service, but because it's a great, entertaining movie that will bring you back to what you felt when you were a kid.
I, for one, find solace in Kathleen Kennedy reassuring people on multiple occasions that there is no Jar Jar and there are no midichlorians discussed or shown. I'm OK if they drop a reference at the First Order committing genocide by using Starkiller base to destroy the entire solar system where Naboo sits and wiping out all Gungans from existence. And open with another full-scale test and vaporize all Ewoks while going at it. I mean, how else are we going to believe these new villains are meaner than The Empire?
OK, I geeked out.

I just watched 12 hours of a 14 hour Star Wars livestream.

No Star Wars was shown but the guys watching had nice commentary, and if you can hear the lines the movies are as vivid in my head as on a screen.

My ex is one of the associate producers. She confirmed 66% of the returning cast contracted to have have their trailers stocked at all times with adult diapers. She mentioned that the veteran cast was able to really project a sense of immediacy to many of the more dramatic scenes, but overall, things seemed a bit loose which was nicely contrasted by the turgidity of some of the younger cast members. She loved working on the film and said to expect a real log ride!

Uh Oh Kevin Smith saw it, then it must be a gem. (sarcasm)
Great Post @R.
But you do confirm some of my thoughts. For example, a friend of mine has stated his hate for the prequels(which is understandable from various points of view) Now he's knocking TESB saying yoga was the worst part of that movie. The writing in episode 4 was horrible and therefore finally, we Are hopefully getting the movie that we have been waiting on.
I was standing there watching other friends nod in agreement(you know we were having a geek meeting). I came to the conclusion that none of these fools cared for Star Wars from the get go. Why bother standing in line to see the Abrams reboot. I'm still scratching my head.
