I imagine that some of the boost in membership must be a result of the fact that you can't view photos on the new platform without an account.

The platform upgrade helps, indeed. I'm still on a desktop and shall continue to browse from a computer, desktop or laptop; but I do remember Poogle threatening to penalise with rankings or whatever those sites that didn't fully support mobile devices. As a site owner, I got the 'warning' but decided not to comply anyway. To this day, my site is not mobile-compatible and shall remain so for the foreseeable future.
