If you use a pipecleaner during and after each smoke, a pipe requires little else for cleaning. If it is well designed and made you don't have to remove the stem more than a few times a year, and you do not have to wipe out the inside of the smoking chamber except after the very rare reaming. If it starts to taste consistently sour remove the stem when cool and clean with a strong alcoholic beverage. You may smoke the same pipe as often as you wish. Resting does improve the taste though, because it gives it a chance to dry. Moisture is released by burning tobacco, and that moisture doesn't taste good.
