Beautiful! I only passed through the main islands, but I lived at nearly the outer reaches of the Hawaiian chain for about eight months on Midway Islands. The only habitable island beyond that is Kure, where the Coast Guard had a very small base at the time. Today, the Navy is long gone from Midway; it's in the charge of the Department of Interior which has tried providing tourist lodgings, but I believe now has only a skeleton crew there, and maybe no one. It requires a desalination plant for occupancy. The albatross who have nested there for ages is beleaguered now by plastic trash which they uptake as food and feed to their chicks, causing many fatalities. It is as far from Honolulu to Midway as it is from New York to Omaha. When I was on Midway, it looked pristine; it wasn't, but that was long before the vast vortex of trash became overt.
