Well, a little of both. I actually do like a little tongue bite. Of course, the nicotine kick is good too.

My wife loves the true tongue bite, not burn. she loves the way a pipe and cigar gets very hot toward the bottom. . Me personally I don't like any type of bite to the mouth are tongue. I see where your coming from as she too likes what you describe.

A little nicotine buzz, sure. The spiciness of Perique, definitely. The "thank you sir, may I have another" of Latakia, absolutely.
But I'm working on eliminating the tongue burn from bad technique, myself. Not a fan. :D

Roth hits the nail on the head again, as usual
enjoy certain blends because of the sharpness
I like it a lot. It's like kissin' a girl and gettin' your face slapped. Not a bad thing at all. I keep a lot of "sassy" blends in my lineup.
I think the desire for very sharp tobaccos is more widespread than generally thought.

Mac Baren product specialist Per Georg Jensen thinks so too. He says a lot of people cannot live without it.

His comment is found at the start of the Factory Tour part 3 video, just before he informs us that Virginia #1 is

the only Mac Baren tobacco composed of only Virginia leaf.

The video is very good. Did you see all of that tobacco!! What a place.
He said, "Tongue bite is not necessarily bad."
It is interesting how he talks about how we have moved away from 5-6 smokes a day to maybe 1 or 2. The old guys had much tougher tongues because they smoked more and their mouths were used to it. Not as much so today.
I think I like it a little more than normal because I have smoked cigars for a while and am not just starting smoking. It does not effect me the same as someone just starting. I am a little more used to it. I do think pipes burn hotter than cigars and can give you more bite.
I love Crown. Not Wild Turkey. Got sick on Wild Turkey once. Bad night.

I never enjoy tongue bite, though I will occasionally accept a trade-off to smoke an especially good full-strength

blend. Some full-strength blends don't bite at all, and that's best. If I begin to miss the flavor in food, or it's

altered by pipe smoking, or if the peppermint in the toothpaste makes my gums and tongue burn, that's

tobacco I can do without.

I think that for those puffers, who like me, enjoy certain blends because of the sharpness (bright virginias come to mind), I can see how that sharpness could be interpreted as "bite." Prevalent when such blends are fresh, the "bite" does mellow out as these bright virginia blends age.
Very true. Call it the sharpness or tang of red virginias or whatever but it's not the same as tongue bite.
