I found this line particularly interesting. The CGC-24 stood by the HMS Albatross for two days and acted as a courier, including "fetching an officer's pipe" and transporting personnel. Despite these minor SNAFUs, most of the cutters were well used and spent the day pulling British and Canadian soldiers and sailors from the channel.

Davet:
A very sincere thank you for starting this thread today.
I've said several prayers these past few days for the souls of those young men who parachuted into the Cotentin Peninsula and all the warfighters scrambling off their landing craft onto the Juno, Gold, Sword, Utah and Omaha beaches - as well as every sailor, airman, meteorologist, logistics specialist and cook who supported the invasion.
June 6th is one of my very personal high holy days, Davet.
You Canadians always remember better than us Yanks. (We weren't in the Great War long enough to experience the losses you suffered.)
Kindest regards,
Fnord

My Dad was a junior officer aboard a Large, Stationary Target in the European Theatre. Unfortunately he died before I could extract more than the most cursory details of his service.
Thanks, Dave, for the thread.
