In this edition of Antiquarian Nicotiana Brittanica, we will look at CW&Co. --- and sadly, looking will be the gist of it, another pictorial survey, because I can't really find much concrete textual info on the firm.
Cohen Weenan & Co. was established in 1864, originally in Browns Lane, Spitalfields. It was relatively small - in 1897 they had three commercial travellers, against Wills of Bristol's thirty.
In 1931, Godfrey Phillips acquired control of Cohen Weenen and CW&Co. became a subsidiary of GP.
I did find a brief report, only a snippet, from 1962, saying that GP had lost home market rights for the CW&Co. brands, which seemed to go into the hands of an Imperial-related holding.
Godfrey Phillips was bought out by Philip Morris in 1968.
That's all I got.
And now,

the image gallery.
Bishop's Move was one of their early brands.

Another early brand,

Sweet Crop.
A very interesting experience as reported by John Loring...

Next,

we have Classic Curly Cut,

which was heavily advertised...
...even on the cinema screen!
This commercial supposedly dates to the 1920's...

Possibly their most famous brand, Afrikander was marketed and promoted as an economical Empire Leaf blend.

Interesting read as always Troy!

"And if you showed me the tin & told me the story, I would swear you were a g-d- liar ..."

That is a priceless quote from Mr. Loring!!

Something about the green, red and white color scheme on the Royal Seal tins really grabs me........Not sure why??

Maybe it invokes Christmas time? Reminds me of the Limited edition Squadron Leader(with Perique) colors..... I love that color combo!

Thanks for this pictorial.... well done!.........

These threads are my favorite part of the forum. Thank you. I enjoy them immensely.
And yet, at the same time, they make me so sad - for a world that has disappeared, never to be seen again. Progress...

Thanks gents,

I love doing this stuff.
Wish I was better at finding actual concrete textual info though...

Matt,

I love that quote,

it's great!
Everybody would probably call me a g-d liar about an old cutter top of Gallaher's Girder with a couple of small pinholes on the top, it was dry, but man it had a rather robust flavor and totally surprised me!

Luckily, I have a witness though, who also smoked some, because Eric was there!
And I agree with you about that color scheme,

one of the reasons I've always loved the LS logo!

Great taste to you, Sir!
I stole it fair and square off the 'Net using my own search terms. I hadn't seen you or anyone else using it until today.
Since you started with it before me, is it all right if I continue on?

Troy, is as honest as the day is long, with a heart as big as the state of Texas and man was I ever there! Thanks for the opportunity my friend for getting to try this ole Baccy from Gallaher's, my favorite Tobacco House! I'm kinda partial to them, after all they are the ones responsible for blending my favorite tobacco.
Cheers,--Eric
