Yesterday I made an impulse buy.
It was a last-second decision, and I didn't even research these things or the going prices --- I've been vaguely aware of such flintless lighters, but have never really seen them discussed with regard to pipes, it looks like to me they'd work great if the fuel doesn't taint the taste too much.
Here's an Electomatch:

...but what I found was a Dorset version made in England, and after watching this video I said damn, that's cool as hell! and went ahead into the unknown and bought the thing...

...this morning I looked around a little more, it seems the swirl brown bakelite ones go for the most and prices vary pretty wildly, but overall they can be had for very cheap.
Here's the one I got:

I can't wait to try it out, hopefully it won't be a disaster.

I had no idea such a thing even existed. Let us know how it goes because that thing is right up my alley. Looks like it would be great for sitting at home. Great find!

That is awesome. Looks like it would be ideal for lighting a pipe, easy to direct, small flame. Very, very cool.

I'd get one but for the two year old grandson that is VERY curious about how things work.

Holy smokes, that is cool! Where do you get one of these? Is anyone making them new? If you don't mind me asking, what did that cost you?

Well that's neat as heck. I saw this one and decided to take a risk... they said they don't know if it works, which isn't a great sign, but I can't imagine these are very complicated devices.

I can only imagine they were discontinued in part due to safety... I'm just imagining the match piece falling out after it got bumped off a table, doesn't seem like it's held in in any way.
I'll see when it arrives. Nifty idea though.

I've wanted a Ronson Touch-Tip like this one ever since I saw The Maltese Falcon:

Golly, haven't seen one of those in ages. Now I can see a real run on those still out there, it's now on my wish list.

I just picked up one of these off ebay as well. It even included the original instruction manual! I can't wait to see how it works and give it a try.
