My wife picked up a GBD made Irwin's 9613 as an early birthday present, and while cleaning it up I decided to not smoke it until IPSD this month. No abrasives were used except a wet paper towel with a lighter, toothpaste, and my thumb, and the cake was removed with a Case XX clip blade. In reading about the Irwin's line, I found that the pipes were cured with rum. To simulate this I've coated the bowl with a very fine layer of rum simple syrup and coated the layer with sorghum ash. The stem will be thumb buffed with a little more toothpaste but satisfied overall.

Really impressive. Looks great and hard to believe you did this all with minimal products

I've been avoiding sandpaper and micromesh for almost a year. Too much risk of altering the stem shape and size plus they can remove stem logos.

Wow! That turned out great, Duane! Enjoy the heck out of it!

Well, at least your not waiting until Christmas
Rum cured? That sounds interesting. I believe that's the first I've heard of that.

Nice! I wouldn't have believed you accomplished that with some basic household implements.

I had been using a Magic Eraser, Barkeeper's Friend, and toothpaste. Now I've used a lighter and a wet paper towel to remove the oxidation and toothpaste to shine it up.

Thanks for the enlightenment. I will try the Toothpaste when needed. I have been using the magic eraser for a few years and I am happy with the results. Happy IPSD and enjoy the Haddo's for the first smoke!

Magic Erasers do a great job and have used them in the past on many cleanups. The toothpaste just gives it that mirror shine.
