When we were at war

When we were at war

There everyone used to think about their

Beloveds or about their wives

There everyone used to think about their

Beloveds or about their wives
And I could certainly think

And I could certainly think

About the times when I looked at a pipe

In her blue smoke

About the times when I looked at a pipe

In her blue smoke
Like when she lied to me sometimes

Like when she lied to me sometimes

But the his girl's heart gave love

to someone else for a long time

But the his girl's heart gave love

to someone else for a long time
But I didn't think about them at all,

But I didn't think about them at all,

I just smoked a pipe

with bitter Turkish tobacco,

I just smoked a pipe

with bitter Turkish tobacco,
I just shoot bullets faithfully

I just shoot bullets faithfully

hoping to appease my pain

and to set a limit to our hostility

hoping to appease my pain

and to set a limit to our hostility
When we will be at war,

When we will be at war,

to meet the bullets flying

on our black horse

to meet the bullets flying

on our black horse
But it looks like death it's not for me

But it looks like death it's not for me

and my black horse

carries me away from the fire again

and my black horse

carries me away from the fire again
Pipe better than woman? Or pipe a sorrow soul's companion? :puffpipe:

But the his girl's heart gave love
does not make sense.

Aldecaker, you are 100% right, this is a version of this song that I love most:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecAO8bFZpPA
Its a great and very exact translation. But if you want to sing along, here is my wife's version for the first couple of phrases:
When we were solders at the War

When we were solders at the War

I used to smoke my little pipe

And think about my darling wife...
That would be far away from original/correct text, but would give you a same rhythm that song goes. :puffy:

Do they re-enact pogroms, too?

No, that wouldn't be very... umm... I had to Google it. I don't... think so. But some Russian guys do seem... mobish. But, then again, "some" guys with no necks, face tattoos, and knuckles dragging the ground all get stereotyped by me. I am trying to be more open-minded, I know, I know, I really need to be more... accepting... but when they are hanging me out of a sixth story window by my legs, or smashing vodka bottles on my head... well... I don't know for certain that they are Vodka, there I go again, stereotyping... there could be more than one white liquor out there, that Russians... or maybe Ukrainians (not to be all judgey)...
But, they do, do that dance where they kick their legs up in the air and walk around with their knees bent like they need to poop really bad. :puffy: It's fun... But, the food isn't nearly as good as the Lebanese Festival. Plus, the Lebanese have hookas. :puffy: Two dolla hookas.

Like most "modern russian folk songs" it was written by a jewish writer in the 40s.

Pogroms? Let them try...

I had a great aunt who was raped by cossacks during a pogrom in Ukraine around the turn of the century. But maybe those sharp-dressing dancers were just misunderstood.

Two dolla hookas.

You crack me up.

I always wondered where Russian mobsters keep their guns. I tried to stow my 1911 in track pants one time, and believe you me, it did not go well.

Reminds me of a family story from the old country. A band of Cossacks were going to massacre the village where my great granduncle lived and worked as the blacksmith. They came riding through once, then turned around to begin their fun and games. Great Granduncle Max, figuring that he really had nothing to lose, ran out of his shop, hammer in hand, and took down the lead rider and began to beat the crap out of him. The rest of the Cossacks thought this was pretty hilarious and just watched. Then they adopted him and his village. They figured anyone that insane brave merited their respect.

Later, Max came to this country, opened up a mining operation near Cheyenne Mountain, built a railroad spur to service it. Got swindled out of his company, emptied the contents of his revolver into the revenue agent who bore false witness against him on the courthouse steps in Atlanta, got pardoned, and wound up as one of the leading citizens of Chattanooga where he died at the age of 104. That was one generation that you did not mess with.

"...and wound up as one of the leading citizens..."
Small wonder there. I'd vote for a guy like that if he were running for office in my town!
