This is the fishtail version of Dunhill's definitive canted Dublin, the 137. Besides wider, the stem is also shorter, which makes the pipe feel a little lighter and more comfortable than the straight stem version. The tradeoff is a bit of panache, though. (Which is a good excuse to have one of each, right? Sometimes a man wants style, sometimes he wants an overstuffed recliner. )

I have a smooth St. Regis pipe that looks identical to that shape. I believe St. Regis is an Ashton reject, so that makes sense.

Very stylish, indeed! I like the slight cant in the bowl, George.

Beautiful pipe. And it’s my birth year! Would make a wonderful Christmas gift. I can send you my shipping info if you need it.

Very nice.
Educate me please, where did the name 'Shell Briar' come from. Any idea why they chose the word 'Shell'?

Thanks George. Interesting. I didn't find the explanation of why he chose 'shell', but maybe it is thought similar to a sea shell look?

Legend has it that the first batch of Shell bowls were brought to Alfred in a box after being cooked and blasted, and being lighter and harder than normal they made a musical rattling sound as he sorted through them, like sea shells. Delighted, he christened it the Shell finish on the spot.
No one really knows, of course. But it sounds romantic, and is at least plausible.

Great looking pipes. Can you explain the variation in the buttons (or any links would be appreciated). Seeing some of your collection is great, and has filled a void that fishnbanjo supplied with regular submissions of his collection.

Very nice Georgie Boy.
I've only got one Dunnie Shell Briar in my modest stable... A Bent Bulldog. Love the texture of them.
