Sorry for highjacking, but I recently ordered a NOS 70ies / 80ies pipe. It has not yet arrived, so I still have time to ask, if a pipe of that age also in danger of cracking? Or more of a general matter - how should one proceed with an old pipe, that has been untuched for a while to minimize the risk of cracking?

Thanks a lot in advance!
Your pipe is probably fine to smoke, 1870's or 1880's would be a different story, but if you are concerned, just take care to smoke it extra slow for the first dozen bowls or so while you build up a layer of carbon as an insulator. Smoke it as cool as you can. If the tobacco goes out give it a moment or two then fire it up again. Just keep the smoking temp down initially.

Thanks once again for your precious advice, Sable'! The 1880ies / 1870ies are out of my range, though.
