I picked up this 1800's clay pipe that had a broken off stem that I did what I believe would be a historical style repair to it. What I did was carefully opened up the air passage in what was left of the shank and inserted a reed stem in it. Shockingly it wasn't all that hard to do and brought back this piece of history to smoke-able condition. This was a fun project to do and it smoke well for such an oldie.

You know that was probably dug out of a privy, right? It's neat and all, but I don't think I'd smoke it.

If I had a pipe that old I'd sanitize it with one thing or another, have a holy man bless it and light it up!

Very neat! I've seen a lot of old clay bowls, but never one with pips or nipples or whatever they're called like that one. The clay foot, yes, but not the rest.
Hope someone can talk about that!

I have read, but do not know for a fact, that the "thorns" were to allow you to actually grasp the bowl without burning the crap out of your fingers.

Aldecaker, that makes perfect sense, I was wondering that myself.

While the the thorns don't get as hot it is still better to hold it by the shank/stem. They do make so you can set it down and it will not fall over while lit.
