Is this a pipe club gathering?

I re-watched The Hobbit this weekend. One of my favorite scenes, not counting all the action, is in the very beginning when they all enjoy a song and pipes in the hobbit "hole". This is how I picture a pipe club meeting of the past. I am yet again inspired to go hunting for replicas of the pipes...

    Quitting cigs

I know many of you have done this more or less successfully. I was going to try it on my summer vacation. Now I need good reasons to psych myself. Obvious ones are - the quality of the tobacco is much better with pipes - pipe smoking is better for my health - I rather see myself as a pipe...

Pipe bag and a new pipe

I got this bag a while back but didn't get around to have my wife take pictures of it until now: The pipe is a Danish Club (A Stanwell second). I guess a second because it has a tiny, tiny speck of a flaw in the briar. I do like the grain pattern on it.

You either hate it or love it (1792)

I must admit I was always a bit apprehensive when it came to getting this tobacco: Samuel Gawiths 1792 Flake. I always heard you either love it or can't stand it. I finally decided to order some of it for testing purposes. The aroma from the tin was awful. The image that came to my mind was...

    Haven't had a bowl in a week

Sucks having a flu. It just started easing up during the weekend so I just might have one tonight. Something crazy entered my mind during the week: What if there was a tobacco with eucalyptus flavor or essence designed for people with a cold? I bet that would open up the sinuses. Something like...

    My first Falcon

I got this Falcon (+ an extra bowl): As you can see the bowl has black paint and an unfinished top. This started to bother me so I removed the paint, sanded it and restained. I found a nice surprise underneath - a really nice grain pattern! I wonder what went through the persons mind who...

    A couple of horrible days...

I've had an awful week. We had our dog sterilised and at the same time a lump removed from her chest (fat, not the c-kind). Because of all the medicins and stress her tummy got upset and she hasn't been able to do a number 2 for four days. She's been crying and whining and generally been...

    Clenching?

How do you do it?? I've been smoking pipes for a few years and finally got some soft bits to try clenching. It is awful! If I keep the pipe in my mouth it triggers a gag reflex and feels very uncomfortable. Can one ever get used to it? I guess I'll always be a handholder.

    My first pipe kit project

First let me say that I have no experience in woodwork and probably have my thumbs in the middle of my hands. I started out with a block of briar with a stem. Then I did some shaping. And some more shaping. Then I used some black stain and sanded it off and did the first coat of real...

    E-cigarettes banned in Boston

E-cigarettes banned in workplaces It is amusing that pipes and pipe tobacco is rarely mentioned in these reports. Are we such a small fringe?

Opinions on breaking in a pipe

Something new came up. I've never had a pipe that was bare briar in the bowl. Usually they have pre-carb stuff or even (eww) stain like some Petersons. This one is, since I carved it myself. How do you break in a pipe like this? Do you use the 1/3 bowl a couple of time, half a bowl a couple of...

    In praise of Irish Flake

I have a few tins in my collection but I haven't gotten around to opening one in a few months until last night. I had totally forgotten how great it is. I think this is one of Peterson's best offerings quality-, taste- and, of course, strength-wise. It is one of those smokes which gets better...

    Arcadia Mixture

I'm currently reading this book: My Lady Nicotine And now I'm of course curious about the mysterious "Arcadia Mixture" which the author praises. I think I'll go on a search for it. So far I've uncovered that it was Dr. Watson's tobacco of choice.

    Indoor v outdoor smoking

I usually (almost always) smoke indoors but occasionally I have a bowl outside. I've noticed that the tobacco tastes different when smoking outside. I think you lose something when the smoke "disappears" in the wind as opposed to when you smoke indoors. I can't actually smell the roomnote myself...

What should I do (bad pipe)?

This is the one pipe I just can't smoke. It smokes really hot and gurgly no matter what I do. It is the only estate pipe I ever bought so I didn't invest a lot of money in it. I was thinking it could perhaps be improved if I sawed the bowl in half (it has a huge bowl) and maybe tried stripping...

    Zulu time

When I saw this one I knew I had to have it. It is a Savinelli 404 with a silver band. My wife got a new camera and I think she takes great pictures. Also in the picture is my Dunhill tamper. Here is a close-up of the rustication: Now, show me your zulus.

    Holmes iPad home and lockscreen

I don't know if you use iPads but here are my Holmes homescreen and lockscreen: homescreen, and lockscreen. Thought I'd share them. :-)

    Sherlock Holmes

Old news to many here but I recently "acquired" the first season of Sherlock Holmes with Jeremy Brett. Very entertaining and Jeremy makes a fine Holmes. Also, lots of pipe smoking. This is a very interesting churchwarden, although Mr Holmes could clean the stem every once in a while (it is very...

    It broke!

My trusty tamper/pipe tool. The cleaning spike just broke off. :( So, now I am looking into buying a new one - a better one. Since we can't all get the magical Uncle Arthur tamper with its mystery ring, I was wondering: Do you have any recommendations? This time I am willing to spend a lot more...

    Stanwell limited edition

I like the year 2010 Stanwells a lot so I got another one. This is a limited edition (302 of them were made) smooth one: Here it is, behind the rusticated one: A close-up: ...and some flames: This is turning out to be one of my favorite shapes.
