Some Thoughts from the Wine World

I haven’t posted recently, but this thread caught my attention. In response to the OP there are, IMO, analogies between the wine world and our world of pipes and tobaccos, and even with the world of Hi-Fi music systems. Pipe smoking is my 20-year hobby, whereas fine wine collecting (and...

Have You ever Heard of Walnut Flake By Ogdens

condorlover1 - I think you are right, but also it doesn't seem to get the press that IMO it deserves. I heartily recommend this old-style blend to any serious tobacco lover who has access to UK e-tailers.

*** What Are You Smoking?*** (May 2018)

The rest of last night's GH&Co Dark Flake (2013 vintage) in a hard-working Charatan's Make "Selected".

Have You ever Heard of Walnut Flake By Ogdens

Paulie - I am very familiar with this blend, very familiar indeed. It was certainly a popular OTC in my dad's day, in fact I can remember its aroma when, as a boy, I used to rub it out for him. He swore it was a better baccy than the original Bruno. To me, it still smells the same as I remember...

    Harold Wilson At Pipe Exhibition

Sounds like many of us here, actually.

    Harold Wilson At Pipe Exhibition

Nice pipe though! A cherrywood-shaped Charatan perhaps? Of little interest to anyone else here, Harold Wilson was the first sixth-former at my old (state) grammar school - Wirral Grammar School for Boys - an "Old Wirralian". He went on to Oxbridge, I didn't. thus all we share was the old school...

What Music Are You Listening To (May 2018)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6s9D6PLCyL8 Jodlerclub Alpeblueme Herisau - Zäuerli - I would happy to sink a few steins with these guys, and despite their ear-rings I would not wish to mess with them, Lol! It is interesting that the smallest chap has the most powerful voice. I started trawling...

*** What Are You Smoking?*** (May 2018)

Solani Aged Burley Flake (2013 - from the Retirement Cache) in a Pre-Rep Peterson "Flat Grip". This is a great blend and I find myself swithering as to whether I prefer it over ODF (a tie, probably)

Quit, Quitting, Have Quit, Maybe. . .

So sorry to hear this. It seems to me such a pity that one should give up a passionately held hobby without apparently a definitive diagnosis of "tobacco-related disease". But I agree, to stay off the pipe, it may be necessary to avoid pipe fora, at least until the habit is kicked into...

    Escudo & Dunhill Luxury Rolls

I enjoyed that, thank you! Now off to cleanse my palate - 18 year-old Macallan. Slàinte mhath!!

Any Pipe Smokers Also Take Snuff?

Occasionally, when I can't smoke the pipe, e.g. if I want to watch the TV in the sitting room. Nasal snuff only - "Hedges" or the old "F&T" blends. Snuff has never been a habit, just an "any port in a storm" substitute for the pipe.

    Lakelands

workman: if you want to try one with Lakeland Essence I suggest Coniston Cut Plug (Ennerdale is at the extreme end of the spectrum for a first go). Sadly I can't tolerate blends with Lakeland Essence, and I am very sensitive to its presence. Which is interesting as I love Revor Plug, which...

The Search For a New Virginia Favourite Is On

barepipe: a distinguished trio with which to begin your quest. I have been a fan of Rattray's Marlin Flake for many years, but recently I have fallen in love with Rattray's Old Gowrie - stellar IMO, and worth a try. My own No.1 Va has always been SG FVF/FVP, and why not? But, I recently opened a...

    Lakelands

Quote: "In addition, some are scared off by reports that unscented tobaccos are essentially ghosted by being processed in the same machinery......" Eye-rite! Perhaps mass olfactory hysteria, or members of the "Homeopathy Believers Club"?? I have even seen it suggested that the very...

Quit, Quitting, Have Quit, Maybe. . .

saltedplug - before you give up, I have a couple more questions: - Before picking up the pipe in 2001, did you smoke cigarettes? - Have you seen a pulmonologist? - Have you been fully investigated (CT, lung function tests etc.) for smoking-related diseases, e.g. COPD and/or emphysema? I hope...

    Lakelands

The Lakelands and “Lakeland Essence” - Terminology/Definition Confusion? - To one degree or another, some blends taste ‘soapy’, ‘perfumed/floral’ or both. Some like it, many don’t. - The “Lakelands” are a beautiful part of Cumbria in North West England, more commonly called the “Lake District”...

*** What Are You Smoking?*** (April 2018)

McCl Dark Star (2013) in a 1985 Dunhill "HT Collector". Still not too keen on the vinegary/ketchup flavour, but it does dissipate after a few minutes.

    Care & Feeding Of Morta

Jay - I have three morta pipes, crafted by Chris Askwith. The morta he uses is 10,000-year-old Norfolk bog oak. As the article you quoted mentions, the material is semi-petrified and thus the pipe smokes like a clay or meerschaum; it does not influence the flavour of the tobacco, unlike, say, a...
