Where are all These Ukrainian Pipes Coming From? (A Tale of Mundane Mystery)

You have to be very careful when buying Ukrainian pearwood pipes. All I wrote in the original post is still true: All these different sellers are likely selling lower-end factory pipes from the Golden Gate factory. Some of them are awesome, but it is important to remember they are mass produced...

    The Ones That Got Away

For years....YEARS! I wanted a chacom Match 95 (its their acorn shape, but its really almost and egg/acorn hybrid). Classic Chacoms have that graceful old school french look that I love, along with a smaller bowl size. From almost the very moment I started with pipes, I desperately wanted one of...

Aromatic with no flavor and almost no room note

brudertuck, I actually started with an English (Peterson's Old Dublin ) - there is no right way to start. You might want to avoid straight Va's at first, mostly because they can be really finicky and unforgiving. Really, the best advice I ever got was to try a bit of everything and figure out...

Aromatic with no flavor and almost no room note

brudertuck, Try Sutliff's line of aromatics. They are a solid offering and tend to pack plenty of flavor into the tobacco. There are good aromatics, there are bad ones, just like any tobacco - just remember to smoke slow and try a bit of everything and, in the end, smoke what you like. Personal...

    Pocket Knives for Pipe Smokers

Don't think I would ream with it, but my Opinel No. 8 work knife is great for cutting tobacco. Good steel and holds an edge like nobodies business. Found an old picture that shows my knife.

    The Shadow Knows

There is always The Big Broadcast on NPR. As far as I can remember, they haven't played The Shadow in a long time, but they regularly have other classics like Gunsmoke and Jack Benny.

@yffulf13 You can post it direct by using the "IMG" button above and the direct image link, should work out like this:

    The Shadow Knows

@mcitinner1, My most favorite of old radio serials - I think the Shadow could put Batman in his place. Even liked the movie adaptation. How about old film serials, I'm pretty partial to Rocketman...even used to have the whole collection of them on VHS. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V9BZiWF6WNA

So I Made a Very Short Trip To My Local B&M

That's a huge fail, in the age of internet retailers, B&M's have to be spot on for the in-store experience. I'm quite lucky, I have my choice of four great stores in easy distance - including one that I would argue has a couple of the best house blends in the country.

    Best of the Best

I going to go with the "impossible to quantify" answer.

    Sutliff Aro's

I'm a fan of Bacchanalia - it's pretty unique. Not a fan of Navigator, too dimensional for me, and always starts to taste ashy after about 10 minutes.

***What Are You Smoking *** (March 2015)

Very little, at least until it stops raining.

    Favorite Factory Made Pipe

Don't know if I can pick one, but here are two of my favorites: Mr. Brog No. 19 Missouri Meerschaum Ozark Mt. Hardwood

    Tobacco recommendations...

Sutliff's aromatics are pretty nice in general - lots of choice and variety. I'm a big fan of Sutliff Bacchanalia, it's fairly different than pretty much anything else I've ever had. I have a feeling that most folks will either love it or hate it.

***What Are You Smoking *** (Feb. 2015)

We finally got a nice day, so I took advantage: Newminster superior round slices in my squat Tsuge, followed by a nice lunt with my MM hardwood and some Sutliff Trafalgar. Following a Va with an English was a good move.

I remember there being two places to change your avatar pic: One on your account profile, and one in the forum settings.

    Suggestions for Virginia Flake?

It's hard to go wrong with the Orlik golden sliced - I'm sure that suggestion with come up frequently in this thread. Personally, I would suggest you give Samuel Gwaith's Kendal Cream flake a go. Its a Va/burley blend where the Virginia leaf is very forward, the burley playing a supporting...

Sad to See Some of My Favorite Members are Gone

Seems to be a pattern with these forum (well, active forums in general)... Great group of folks gather -> posts abound, Crap-posts low -> mods relax, enjoy buoyant sense of community -> posts begin to digress, tangents are made -> Lack of corrective action sees crap-posts on rise -> "The...

    Buying Everclear Around DC

@khartman, I can confirm that you can get Everclear in DC. Purchased it several bottles over the years. But, if you are looking for a grain liquor for cleaning your pipes, I would suggest Gem Clear Liquor - same 190 proof goodness and a good bit cheaper than Everclear. It even dries a bit better...
