    Bad News from the Doctor...

Thank you very much for your service irish. My thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family.

    Best low-end briar?

Have to say my Dr. Grabows are pretty awesome for the $. Definitely recommend them to somebody just getting in the hobby, though they may be the only brand of briar I ever own.

    Tasting your tobacco

Couldn't agree more with the above posters, exhaling through the nose will bring out nuances you neve knew existed. I personally prefer cool water with my pipes, however nothing is better than coffee and a pipe full of burley to start the day.

    50% Smoker's Pride Cherry Cavendish + 50% Carter Hall =

A pretty darn good smoke! I've heard of some folks using OTC Burleys to make crappy blends better, but I thought SPCC would be an exception. This stuff was OK at best, and just had a weird flavor. Decided to mix things up with adding CH and by golly it isn't quiet as vile! Just wanted to say...

    Ghosting

Alrighty, looks like I shall be going to the GB so I'll definitely be sure to get 2-4 oz. of some Va or Va and Perique blends. I just might have to get on Aristocob.com since they accept cash!

Ahhh, sounds like I may have to drum up a "fishing trip" to Gatlinburg. Have you tried any of these or would you recommend one in particular?

    Ghosting

No Va's yet, I've only been able to get my hands on simple stuff. I am not really able to order online, and there are not many good pipe shops around here past the Gatlin-Burlier. My Mom doesn't approve of my smoking and I'm only 18, so I basically have to do "undercover ops".

    Everything Tastes The Same

How are you packing your pipe? I gravity fill, tamp down to 1/2 the bowl height, gravity fill again to just over the top, then just tamp it down to about 1/8" from the rim of the bowl. I find this is a great way to pack if you are smoking aros since they are wetter and thus will smoke even...

    Ghosting

Oh, I've smoked it in a cob and boy is it delightful. Only thing is the MM cob I have is quiet small, so I only get like a 30-40 minute smoke. I may try CH in one of the Ozark Mountain Hardwood pipes since they are readily available here; I've heard mixed reviews of them though. I just need to...

    Ghosting

Okay, I'll just make it my aro pipe. I think I might make my Dr. Grabow Freehand ( was going to be an English pipe), a burley only pipe since I have rediscovered my love for carter hall.

    Breaking in my pipe?

I'm with mark, put some Carter Hall in that puppy and smoke it! I have never done anything past making sure the bowl stays cool during the first few smokes from a new pipe. Never had any issues to this day with a cake or over heating, so I'd say it boils down to personal preference.

    Ghosting

So, I posted a thread a few days ago about tobacco not tasting right. I figured I just had off tastes that day, and I smoked something in a different pipe the next day and it was great. I went night fishing a couple days ago and have figured out that my Dr. Grabow Big Pipe is in fact ghosted...

    Any tips?

I was in the same position a few weeks ago. I just couldn't keep my pipe lit, and the experience started to lack the inherent enjoyment of pipe smoking (tongue bite and constant relighting). So, I left the 3 step method and started the 2 step. Just gravity fill, then tamp down to about the...

    Question about pipe tobacco?

As others have already stated, there aren't really any additives compared to what they put in cigs. With pipe tobacco there is PG and food grade addatibes for flavor in aromatics. Whereas in cigarettes there is ammonia and all kinds of disgusting chemicals that make them more addicting. If...

Think Before You Join Other Forums

Wow, I am constantly amazed at how low some people will stoop! Can't believe how seriously some people take something as simple as this.

    Lighters vs. Matches

I prefer a good ol' Bic lighter. I've never been let down by one, they always light right off and I don't really think they effect anything past the third puff after a light. I've tried matches and they really seem to be more of a pain than they're worth.

To Tell or Not to Tell...The Dentist

I heard a good point from Kel (SmokeRingsPipeDreams) on Youtube. He said that personally he wouldn't speak a word of it unless you are asked. His point was that you could be treated as a cigarette smoker and then be treated as such by your insurance. I don't know how valid this point actually...

    Something Ain't Right

I guess it was just an off day. I rested my good ol' tasters for about 24 hours and seems as though I am back to normal. Just smoked some Newfound Blend (Burley and Bright blend from Gatlin-Burlier) in a cob and boy was it good! Thanks y'all for the input.

    Something Ain't Right

Okay, hopefully I am not alone in my random experience. Just the other day I packed my pipe with a blend that I had thoroughly enjoyed the day before, and proceeded to light up. However, it just didn't seem right; the taste was off or something. Was it possibly just my palate telling me it...
