Burleys and Carter Hall (100th Post)

Although I do see an occasional CH lover here, I find it strange to not ever see mention of Granger. Darker in color, and perhaps a little stronger than CH. It has the familiar "raisins" tin aroma. I interchange CH and Granger as yardwork smokes. Could I be the only member here that uses it?

    Stingers, Love'em or Hate'em?

The only pipe I own that still has a stinger is a Kaywoodie Whitebriar. Every time I am cleaning it, I entertain merely cutting the end-ball off to allow a pipe-cleaner passage. I seldom use mine, so never bothered. I imagine that would cure the gurgling while preserving the necessary threads.

    I Don't Get "MacBite"

I solved my "macbite" issues by smoking them in a churchwarden. There are also longer stems (seven inchers)available for cobs that also do the trick for me. Pre-drying your tobacco seems to also be a factor. Worth a try?

    Details - Drying Tobacco?

The pinch test linked above is good advice. However, I prefer to dry until the strands do not stick together at all. The strands should still be flexible; not krinkly. Pipe makers have for decades attempted designs to handle excess condensation. Filters, shank air traps, etc; all to compensate...

Trained geese policing parks against smokers......I hope that municipality beta-test doesn't catch on.

    Sherlock Holmes

Those thirsting for more Sherlock-like adventures can visit the site below for free audiobooks. The site has all the familiar originals, plus the non-Doyle authored extras linked below. You can also select the worded source to read them off your PC screen, instead...

    The Theory Behind Aging Tobaccco

Would tobacco transferred from sealed tins into hand-labelled mason jars have any market value for your family to sell upon your demise? I have seen many prestigeous tins realizing high auction prices. They even appear on ebay with the disclaimer that the collectible tin itself is the auction...

    Tobacco Review Tips: a Rant...

This thread is quite refreshing to me. I came away last year with an assessment that although reviews of cars or appliances may contain valuable info, those for tobacco are likely useless. I had bombarded myself for hours reading what others thought of a blend I considered buying. Along...

Never Seen a Pipe Do This.

I actually watched the video posted above. I like the c-clamp idea. But, did anyone else notice that even the dog lost interest half-way through?

    C&D Bayou Morning

Hmmmmm.......You found it "harsh"? BMF is powerful stuff, at least to me. I at first smoked it for an hour and got a headache and dizziness. It stands as the only blend that ever had that effect. I did eventually finish my tin, but half-bowl at a time.

    Cloudy Vulcanite, Who Cares?

When I get a tan colored discoloration at the mouthpiece, I apply vegetable oil with a fingertip. Follow with a good rub with paper towel. This sometimes re-blackens an entire stem that has age-browned.

    Bit Guards?

The "softies" are too much like a baby-bottle. I use half-inch dia. heat shrink tubing on the mouthpiece of valued pipes. It won't prevent really hard chomps, but eliminates light chatter marks.

Missouri Corn Cob - Natural Ozark Hardwood Maple Pipe - Diplomat Bent

The cob is your best choice while behind a snowthrower and a wind-gust gives your face the wet-slap.....

    Pipe Shapes You Don't Get...

Hey, this thread is three years old! For the history book, I will add: Meerschaum with a skull for a bowl (unwanted mortality reminder) "Bavarian" foot-long full-bent with swing open lid, string tassles, and soda-straw mouthpiece. Stone peace pipe with feathers (they had their day) These...

    Pipers or Pipemen?

It matters little what we call ourselves. Where I live, the sight of a pipe smoker in public is very, very rare. Judging from commentary I have accumulated, the Pipe is considered somewhat of an anachronism. Any pet names we use here (pipeist, etc;) are localized to this small community. It's...

    Outsniping the (eBay) Snipers!

Interesting point-counterpoint thread. I'm curious how Ebay handles a flood of literally last-second bids. Particularly, since several are posted by the same sniping software, and when more than one highest bid amount is identical.

    Show Off Your Tampers

I honestly expected to see at least one picture of simply a human fingertip!

Let's Have Some Fun! Tobaccos You HATE!

What? Someone doesn't like CH? Lets not disrespect our forefathers. (add smiley face here) This thread was fun. Of course, no conclusions can be gleaned from it. Rather than futilely add my own hates, I expect something that made me gag, will spur other posts with a counterpoint. But...

Zippo Lighters: Lighting the Bottom of the Bowl

I was gifted an inscribed standard zippo by my daughter, and I feel I must always use it. I drilled the large hole in the chimney which mimics the pipe version photos. I have the wick pulled up to the center of the new side hole. The wick tip is also leaning out the side hole a bit, toward the...

    Cross Eyed Cricket

I made a mistake that my first bowl of Bayou Morning Flake was a very long session. After about an hour of what seemed like a mild smoke, I tried to stand up. This was the only time I ever got dizzy from a pipe. I did however eventually finish the tin using either small pipes or half-filled...
