Partially Rusticated Billiard With Hand Cut Black Japanese Ebonite Stem

I don't think the chin looks that bad and cutting down the bowl definitely improved the overall proportions.

About To Give Up On Non Aromatics

I find that good scotch and good bourbon are fairly close in price. Blanton's, Four Roses Single Barrel, maybe a bit cheaper than good basic single malts like 10-12 year Macallan, Glenfiditch, Laphroaig, etc. You can get good single malts for less and good single barrel bourbons for less as well.

About To Give Up On Non Aromatics

Nah, that's like saying you can't understand when someone wants to taste grapes and then complains that it takes like grape juice, which is made of grapes. Which leaves out some pretty tasty options like Bordeaux, Barolo, Champagne, Brandy.............;) I've smoked cigarettes. I've smoked...

Love the Pipe, Hate the Stem?

Thanks. Yep, do it all the time. George

Love the Pipe, Hate the Stem?

Okay, someone tell me what "lunt"/"lunting" means. I probably do it all the time and just don't know it.;)

Partially Rusticated Billiard With Hand Cut Black Japanese Ebonite Stem

Nicely done. Looking forward to see what the experts say at PMF. We must have the same set of stamps. I use my initials and the number of pipe I've made. I have a hard time aligning the letters and numbers well. Personally I would like to have a real stamp, just out of vanity, since I am not...

    Am I Smoking Too Much?

Some forms of cancer do show genetic predisposition. Others do not. Theories regarding what triggers transformation from normal cell to dysplasia to malignancy vary according to cancer type and exposure to carcinogens, viruses and many other factors. Squamous cell carcinoma of the mouth, throat...

    Am I Smoking Too Much?

I kind of disagree with the idea that how much is too much is subjective. I suspect that cancer risk (mouth, throat, esophagus) is dose dependent. The more you smoke the higher the risk. How much higher is certainly up for debate. But when you look at risk it is not just about the probability...

    Short Stemmed Billiard

Sasquatch, I'm not questioning the expertise of the folks at PMF when it comes to making high end pipes. That has never been my point. I'm also not doubting that there are lots of folks who can't take any criticism. What I am saying is that expertise is not license to be a jerk and that just...

    Short Stemmed Billiard

Yes, I saw that post. George (LL) knows his stuff. What really finally pushed me away from PMF was a new member who made a nice looking freehand pipe and asked for criticism. It was suggested indirectly that it was crap. He wanted some specifics and asked for them. He got the typical response of...

    Short Stemmed Billiard

Sasquatch, I appreciate your reply here and I appreciate the help you have given me over at PMF. The problem is that there seems to be an assumption that because you're good at something or even famous for it that it is okay to be an "asshole" and that someone needs to run a "gauntlet" for you...

    Im Considering Making My Own

I'm a beginner also. I've made 13 pipes in the last couple of months. I really enjoy it. Some of them are dogs and yet they still smoke okay. I buy briar blocks plus pre-made stems from Vermont Freehand. The last few I made are shown below: They look okay from a distance but they have plenty...

    Short Stemmed Billiard

I've been a member there for over a month. Lots of great info there but the guys they call the 'old guard' seem to enjoy being rude and snooty to beginners and new members. They are the pipe making masters, according to them, but I've pretty much had enough of them. I have not encountered that...

How Many Bowls a Day Do You Smoke?

By that logic you should stop wearing a seat belt too. ;)

How Many Bowls a Day Do You Smoke?

4 - 6 bowls per month in winter months. Almost never during the summer. Usually just when I'm down at my cabin or when I have made a pipe and want to test it. I'm a doctor. Every day I see what tobacco does to people so I treat it with respect.....and don't recommend that people smoke at...

Hopeless search - Holy City Blend from Charleston, SC

Retrogrouch, they did sell it in plastic bags but the main supply was in large glass jars. Back in the day they must have had 30 of them. I’d smell every one of them but always came back to this blend. Shops in Savannah, Hendersonville and Asheville had similar blends but none that were exactly...

Hopeless search - Holy City Blend from Charleston, SC

I got the tobacco from my cabin and will send to Russ sometime this week. Looking at it and smelling it I don't think I dumped another blend in with it. Russ, I'll shoot you an email when I mail it out. And if you have and sell a similar blend I will be excited to buy some from you...

    Moving Reply Box

Since the upgrade I notice that when I'm typing a reply the box moves up and down. I think it may be when ads are loading or something like that. It is like playing a video game keeping the box where I can see what I'm typing. Sometimes the box moves all the way out of view. I do not have the...
