    I'm Happy to Report . . .

That Harvey Ball, the inventor of the Smiley Face, was a pipe smoker! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvey_Ball

    Touch Up Coloring Advice

My estate Askwith windshield pipe has lost its finish at the edge of its chamber. I figure I'll try to dab some Fiebing's dye on the edge with a Q tip. Any advice before I embark on this fool's errand? What color should I use? Any prep suggestions? How do I fix the dye in this circumstance? All...

    Colonel Parker

I didn't learn until today that Colonel Parker smoked a pipe. Looks like a nice straight bulldog in this pic.

    Ebay Global Shipping Program

Through the years, there have been a few horror stories posted here and elsewhere about ebay's Global Shipping Program for pipes sent to the US. I'm trying to gauge the risk of using the program. Has it worked for you or have you lost pipes through it? Do you avoid all auctions that use this...

    BST Pipe

Todd Bannard aka Sasquatch of BST Pipes, the pipemaker extraordinaire with more monikers then most, made me this beauty! Yes, it passes a pipe cleaner. The lovely stem is actually acrylic although it has been colored to look like tarnished vulcanite! The hair bag was clean. I know Sas has...

    Hoowee, GH Kendal Kentucky!

I filled up a bowl of GH Kendal Kentucky yesterday evening and smoked it while watching rubbish on Netflix. It's a shag cut, with a slight molasses flavor and a little earthy. It's pretty tasty. After I finished half a bowl, I decided to call it a night and noticed, while brushing my teeth that...

Question About Searching for Specific Tobacco Blends

If you use the forum search function for posts on any particular blend of tobacco, e.g., "Union Square," the result inevitably contains lots of relatively uninformative posts from the What Are You Smoking threads. Is there any way to exclude posts on those threads from the search result?

What Do You Clean Horn With?

What do you clean the horn on your pipes with? I'm talking about the animal material not the plastic imitation or the shape. Hot water? Cold water? Dish detergent? Soap? Drinking booze? Isopropyl alcohol? Wood alcohol? Leave it dirty?

How Do I Refresh the LJS Stamp on a Ferndown Stem?

The gold colored paint(?) in the LJS stamp on my Ferndown stem is looking a bit spotty and I'd like to refresh it. What can I use? What did Les and Dolly use?

    I Just Ordered a Brigham

I've been curious about Brigham's rock maple insert and was thinking that a straight even draft hole from the bowl to the bit might not be a bad thing. So I surfed the usual places looking for a cheap one when I saw this and couldn't quite believe my eyes. I'll find out when it arrives how many...

Did You Buy a Box of Bosun Plug This Last Shipment?

If you bought a box of GH Bosun Plug this last drop, what was the date code? My box didn't have one and I'm curious when it was made.

    Pith Helmet & a Pipe

I'm guessing this is from the 1950s or 60s, just because the image is relatively sharp. It's not much of a Google challenge, but any guesses where in the Empire this was taken?

Please Educate Me on Dress Pipes

As far as I can tell, opaque dress finishes tend to be priced and treated on the same level as straight or flame grains, i.e., as premium finishes. But I'm not sure why they deserve that treatment. They're perfect for hiding fills and grainless ebuchons, so it seems you can start with cheaper...

My Husband and Wife Pipe Set

Silver Gray and Brad Pohlmann. They're both lovely smokers.

Sam Gawith Special Flakes 1, 2, 3 and 5 Are No Longer in Production

I took a gander over to Synjeco's just to see if there was anything new on the site and saw "Production stop!" on SG Special Flakes 1, 2, 3 and 5. I know that Gawith has said that it will produce items that aren't on the stock list so long as mimnimum requirements are met, but Synjeco was the...

    Santa Claus Vs. Tooth Fairy

    1. Who has the harder job, Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy? 2. Are they in-fact the same person? Please discuss and in so doing please provide support for your assertions.

Seattle Pipe Club Plum Pudding SR: Bland?

Title edited for brevity. -jpm I've always read that if you keep latakia around for too long, it looses its potency. Or that if you open a vintage tin, it might go flat in a couple of weeks, so smoke it fast. No? Me neither. I've had latakia blends from the 70s that were mighty tasty and oh so...

    Samarra - A Fable

Folks probably know that GLP's Samarra Limited Edition is going on sale tomorrow. Every time I hear the name of that town, I am reminded of this fable and its ironic closing twist: “The Appointment in Samarra” (as retold by W Somerset Maugham [1933]) The speaker is Death There was a merchant...

My New KJ Pipes Bamboo Blast

I commissioned this from Kadesh Swanson aka KJ Pipes (who was interviewed on a Pipes Mag Radio Show a few years back). I gave him some constraints on material but the shape and choice of bamboo was all his. I think its gorgeous and am so pleased with it.

    Germain Date Code

It appears that that the current Germain date code has been deciphered. According to this YouTube chap, London Calling with Simon, he spoke with Robert Germain who told him that the letter is the year, with A=2016, B=2017, C=2018, D=2019, E=2020, etc., and the two numbers after the letter, the...
