At-Home Stain Job not 'Sticking' to Restored Pipe

Not quite sure what you mean by that first sentence, but yes, I did the carving. I'm quite new to carving, so it's far from perfect but it wasn't supposed to be uniform anyway. I kinda like the somewhat haphazard look you see in some carved or rusticated pipes. I would like to hear your opinion...

At-Home Stain Job not 'Sticking' to Restored Pipe

I hope you just mean before and after the restoration because that's all I have haha. I didn't take any photos before I re-stained the spots that faded. http://imgur.com/a/qZu6K3w

    Algerian Briar Pipe ID

I picked up an interesting little pipe on eBay a few weeks ago to add to my stack of pipes to restore. It's a fairly unique pipe aesthetically and I'm pretty fond of it. I'd really like to know what company or person made it, though. It's only stamped with "ALGERIAN BRIAR" in an all caps, sans...

At-Home Stain Job not 'Sticking' to Restored Pipe

Thanks for all the advice and for putting up with my noobish questions! This was exactly what I needed to know! Happy smokes all!

At-Home Stain Job not 'Sticking' to Restored Pipe

Thanks! Which part of the process is the best time to apply shellac or an oil to set the stain? Before buffing? After buffing but before waxing? Thanks!

At-Home Stain Job not 'Sticking' to Restored Pipe

I removed the original finish by rubbing with a wire brush and then sanding. The original finish seems to have been varnished in place and no amount of alcohol or acetone would even dull the shine. Ah! I did a quick internet search on the difference between denatured and isopropyl alcohol. I...

At-Home Stain Job not 'Sticking' to Restored Pipe

I'm looking for a bit of advice from those of you who have had success staining your own pipes and/or refurbished estate pipes. I recently worked on an estate Medico pipe which I stained and I have encountered an unexpected problem. While doing a test smoke with PA I was simultaneously working...

Tool for Curling a Pipe Band?

Thanks ssjones! I hadn't gotten an email notification about his reply, so I hadn't checked back yet.

Tool for Curling a Pipe Band?

That's not a bad idea, sadly I don't have either a drill press or a lathe much less the space to keep or use either tool. Yep, that's where I got the photo from. Steve said in the post that he gets the bands from Pipe Maker's Emporium. I've tried their website and all I get is an "Under...

Tool for Curling a Pipe Band?

Thanks everyone! It's actually really great to see how that's done. I was worried it might be as difficult as all that, but I was hoping that perhaps it was actually easier than I imagined. Knowing what I know now and considering the project I'm currently working on, I can assure everyone that...

Tool for Curling a Pipe Band?

Hey everyone, thanks for the responses. It is obvious that I need to better explain what it is I'm trying to accomplish as I certainly didn't do a very good job articulating myself previously. So, I have a straight nickel band like this: https://imgur.com/gallery/gxlAVbg And I am looking to...

Tool for Curling a Pipe Band?

Hi everyone, I've got a pipe that I'm working on right now. I'm replacing the stem and I want to put an army mount on it. I ordered a band that's straight and I was wondering how I could curl one side of it. How can I go about doing that? Or do I just need to buy a different band that's...

Ever Used a Pine Pipe with a Clay-lined Bowl?

Your guess is spot-on. I decided to dig around in my desk for the original box, and though there's no manufacturer name, it does have a little bar code sticker with the infamous "Made in China" disclaimer. What can I say? I was young and foolish then. I think I was still in high school when I...

Ever Used a Pine Pipe with a Clay-lined Bowl?

Here's a photo. It looks like most any other wooden pipe, though the grain might be a little different. You can't really see the clay lining anymore, but it was just a gray lining inside the bowl. Nothing super fancy to look at.

Ever Used a Pine Pipe with a Clay-lined Bowl?

I didn't, actually. I got it from a guy with literally zero glass pipes in his store (this was back before weed was legal in CO). It was the first pipe I ever bought new, so I definitely still had a lot to learn about what makes a quality pipe. I'm guessing I just got some cheap, gimmicky pipe...

    New Guy From Denver

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! Its good to see a lot of fellow Coloradans (displaced or otherwise) are on this site. weezell: I like getting caught in the rain haha. foursidedtriangle: I haven't yet, but it sounds like something that would suit my tastes!

Ever Used a Pine Pipe with a Clay-lined Bowl?

Not quite like that Orley haha. No, it looks just like any regular briar pipe. It just has a gray clay lining the bowl.

Ever Used a Pine Pipe with a Clay-lined Bowl?

One of my first pipes, and one I still smoke out of regularly, is a pine pipe with a clay-lined bowl. The tobacconist who sold it to me said the clay kept the pipe from absorbing flavors; thus ensuring that even strong aromatics wouldn't flavor future smokes. I'm not sure how true that is since...

    New Guy From Denver

Hello Everyone, I'm new to the forum and pleased to make your acquaintance. I've been smoking pipes on and off for about 7 years now (more off than on until recently). I scroll through pipesmagazine.com forums all the time, so it seemed like I should go ahead and join up. Though I live in Denver...
