Big Returns From Small Pipes
I'm on the small bowl camp. In my experience smaller bowls smoke cooler, stay lit better and last longer (in proportion) than regular bowls or larger. I struggle with diameters of 20mm or larger. To me, the ideal bowl is around 18mm wide and around 35mm deep. -

Could Ghosting Actually be a Good Thing?
I thought about that one a lot. I have some Frog Morton stashed away that I was planning to smoke in a dedicated pipe to make a "Frog-Morton-ghosted" pipe for my endless enjoyment... Chris Askwith is one of my favorite carvers and an all-around nice guy to talk to. I'm not too much into neoclassical shapes but that one is killing it. Is that really acrylic though? I thought he favored polyester stems. -

I guess since olive oil is a perishable product that makes sense, but I can tell you it hasn't happened yet to me even though some of those pipes are not handled too much. Maybe I should switch before it does since I already have lots of mineral oil for knife care.- laniromee

Immediately after each smoke I will thoroughly dry the stem. After the pipe has cooled down a bit, I give it a thin coat of olive oil and that's it. I have no reason to prefer olive over mineral but I do.- laniromee

What Makes a Good Pipe?
To me if the fit is good, the airhole drilling is open and meets the bottom of the chamber nicely, the tenon is beveled, stem funneling is decent and the button is thin and rounded, then such pipe is already a best smoker.
