So is This What a $hit Storm Looks Like?

I had a word with Rishi and he says we'll have our starlings back on the condition you have all your grey squirrels back ;). Jay.

What Foodstuffs Best Define the Place Where You Live?

Quite right it's not a doughnut, though a crispy cream might well be ;). I'm afraid when it comes to doughnuts I'm a traditionalist, I just like them fresh from the fryer and tumbled in sugar then in a bag for eating, no topping required. Jay.

    Pipe Tobacco Knives

It's surprising how many folk list Opinel knives on this thread, though I shouldn't really be surprised as I used to use my Opinel #9 (carbon) for cutting plugs. Those blades have and retain an amazing edge though I doubt the S/S versions would be quite the same. Jay.

What Foodstuffs Best Define the Place Where You Live?

I can remember years ago (1980's) the 'winkleman' turning up in pubs to sell his wares in Sheffield city centre. He would wear his tray of wares, usually just cockles and winkles, and travel from pub to pub. I always wondered how he managed to keep his tray full of stock as he was so popular...

What Are You Drinking? March 2024

They look like the short pints my local used to serve up. I was forever asking for a top up which usually had the glass snatched up with a roll of the eyes from the useless barmaid. Jay.

What Foodstuffs Best Define the Place Where You Live?

Over here, shrimps are those tiny things one collects with a shrimp dredge in the shallows, prawns are larger (about 2-3 inches across. What you guys call 'shrimp' we call scampi. Whatever they're called, they're all a delight to eat. Jay.

    Ceramic Kitchen Knives: Any Good?

On a camping trip to Wales some tears ago I pulled a piece of slate from a river bed to sharpen a knife. Not ideal but was better than using a blunt blade. Jay.

    Ceramic Kitchen Knives: Any Good?

Many many moons ago when I worked in the hotel trade we had a guy visit us about every 4 - 6 weeks or so who (for a fee of course) would sharpen/reprofile everyone's knives. Some chefs declined his service preferring to do it themselves, myself among them. My preferred knife is my ~10" Japanese...

    Ceramic Kitchen Knives: Any Good?

I already have a couple of those, but I was looking to buy a set of ceramics in various sizes as my current knives are a mix of sizes & steels though most are stainless steel. Jay.

    Ceramic Kitchen Knives: Any Good?

I do actually have a set of four (varying grades) of diamond impregnated sharpeners that I never got around to using so I'm sure they'd suit. I'm just put off by the supposed fragility of the knives, I'm not at all clumsy but it is a worry. Jay.

    Ceramic Kitchen Knives: Any Good?

I'm looking to add a couple more kitchen knives to augment my German stainless steel ones and wondered about investing in a few ceramic blades. Apparently they're much harder than steel (8.5 mohs compared to 4.5 mohs) but of course they're brittle. Also I hear they keep their edge for much...

Exploring Tobacco Origins Around the Globe

If I was ever luck enough to find myself in Kentucky I'm afraid tobacco farms would be second on my list of must visit places, it would be the bourbon farms that would top my list ;). Jay.

What Are You Drinking? March 2024

Rummaging around in my kitchen yesterday I was delighted to find not one but two bottles of Tamnavulin Double Cask Speyside Malt. In May last year bought a good selection of Tamnavulin bottles after sampling their Sherry Cask expression and being mightily impressed with it and I was pretty sure...

Black Sails Pirate Drama: Any Good?

I ju I just couldn't get into Sopranos, I tried, I really did but was put off by forever seeing that guy talking to his therapist and wondering where the actual action was. Boardwalk was on a totally different level, as you say, great actors and visuals but more importantly a great storyline...

Sampled a New Scotch Last Night.

That is very true. I've had some pretty expensive single malt Scotch whiskies that really disappointed. My usual Scotch intake is blended, Whyte & Mackay being a favourite with Johnny Walker a close second. Me too Mike but in small-medium doses. Ardmore is a great peaty single malt at a great...

Sampled a New Scotch Last Night.

Another low end (I'm cheap) single malt, this time a triple distilled lowland (Glasgow I think) Scotch matured in old bourbon casks from the Auchentoshan Distillery. Very smooth but with no smoke/peat that I could detect and not too sweet. After only two tastings I'd give it a 7/10 rating on my...

Black Sails Pirate Drama: Any Good?

Well I watched the first 2 episodes last night and struggled to work out who was who and what was going on (it's all rather fast paced) but I suppose that could apply to many long drama series. I doubt it will be as good as torchbearers such as Boardwalk Empire or Breaking Bad but I'll muddle...
