A James Upshall Bent Acclaim FH

Now here is a pipe I adore. It has a cavernous bowl capable of giving you over 2.5 hours of enjoyment. I know very little of this series, all I found was a passing reference in connection to the Empire series. The stain looks different from what I have seen in other Upshall Barks. The stem...

    Sextant

There are many crown jewels in the G. L. Pease treasury, and this is certainly one of them. I wish it came with a fun story, such as "I was working on a new English blend, and I dropped some rum flavoring on top -- decided to smoke it and it worked". This is, however, likely the output of a very...

    Peterson Founder's Choice

Inspired by GL Pease's The Virginia Cream, I've been visiting (and revisiting) aromatics. Once I get familiar with a blend, I try to write a review for it. Here's an unexpected hit: Peterson Founder's Choice.

London Mixture and Westminster: A Year Later

I don't cellar tobacco. I'm more of an accidental jar-abandoner and tin-neglecter. A year ago or so I jarred a tin of Dunhill London Mixture and a couple ounces of Westminsree. I've just smoked them back to back in a pipe that is devoted to those two - the rather infamous Peterson Sherlock...

Remembering Freddie Mercury in a very special way

The New York Times reports there is now an asteroid named after Freddie Mercury. The asteroid was discovered in 1991, the year Freddie died, and the name was assigned on Mercury's 70th birthday.

    When was this Pete made?

I'm quite fond of a meershau-lined 407 I found about a year ago on eBay. I can't find any info on these online - but I know there are various Pete experts here. I know it's from the Repuboic era for sure, and I'd imagine it was made no later than the 1970s. Any clues?

If You Own a Peterson Mark Twain...

...I have a favor to ask - can you share a picture of the stem? I imagine it's the same design as in the Deluxe systems (with the aluminum condenser). Thanks!

Breaking-in A New Pipe With Nightcap

Not a pleasant smoke at all. The woody flavor does not blend well with this world-famous blend. I should have used my trusted CH. Lesson learned! Fixed thread title, please see rule number 9. Pertinent portion: Please capitalize words in the thread titles. Thank you, Robert.

    The Joy of Unfinished Pipes

Brand new: After its first bowl of Carter Hall: This is way too much fun. Wish I'd done this years ago. I have another 320 KS Unfinished (a smooth reject, it seems) coming. Can't wait to see them age.

    Feature Request: A Polling Mechanism

Suggestion for our pipe-smoking overlords: Add a polling feature to the site. As an example, consider Slashdot. The site is amostly centered around aggregating interesting techie news and allowing users (including "Anonymous Cowards") to providing commentary. Not unlike our forums, it hosts a...

The Bond (or: Your New Pipe)

The Bond or: Your New Pipe You're home at last. It's been a rather long day, but energy is high. A new pipe awaits. You know what it looks like (you chose it, after all). You open the box with a somewhat unsteady pulse; Part anxiety, part care. Memories of unboxing gifts as a kid and the time...

    Bad smoking pipes

Humor me: it seems to me whenever a new pipe smoker asks for a new pipe recommendation, more often than not discussion about lack of guarantees of a pipe smoking well arise. Such commentary may peppered with cobs vs Dunhills comparisons, the merits of handmade vs machine made pipes, and luck...

In praise of the Peterson System 31

As I finish a bowl of G. L. Pease's Westminster in one of my oldest pipes, a Peterson System 31, I was thinking of how many times I've sung its praises amongst pipe smoking acquaintances, but not here. So here are some observations of this pipe, which I believe to be one of the best smoking...

Prince Albert vs Carter Hall: 2016 Deathmatch

New year, new flame war. Choose one or the other, and tell us why. No "neither", "both", or "try this instead". This is just like a boxing match, with rules governing the punches. So, who will win the crown? The venerable Prince Albert or the respectable Carter Hall? F I G H T ! ! !
