What A Difference A Tin Makes

I've got some 2006 Haddo's and it's in a silver bottom tin and is fine; in fact, I've never seen a gold bottom tin. The only GLP tins I've encountered problems with are the very early tall narrow ones.

    Stonehenge Arrived!

A good friend from US sent me a generous sample of new Stonehenge, so after comments on here and TR, I also got some similar aged GH Louisiana Flake for comparison. Just tried smoking them side by side. Similar indeed - but the Stonehenge is richer and fuller and makes the LF taste quite "thin"...

    Stonehenge Arrived!

Hawky 454 said "I'm hearing that people are saying that this looks and tastes identical to GH&Co's Louisiana Perique Flake. Wouldn't that be something if that's all it was? Anyone here have experience with both? " Don't forget, Guys, that it's not just the component baccy's that determine the...

Classic, out of production Virginia blends

Yes, the Sobranie is a Virginia - the Balkan being just a part of the brand name - a bit aromaticy. Other lost Va.s are Dunhill Ye Old Signe and Dark Flake, Benson & Hedges OVF, Players Gold Leaf, Tawny and DeLuxe Navy Cuts, Sherpa and Sherwood, Godfrey Phillip's Long Cut, Will's Cobnut and...

What makes a VA or Vap a VA

You asked for examples - they are legion; just a few: GL Pease Union Square Samuel Gawith Best Brown Flake and Full Virginia Flake McClelland Christmas Cheer, BlackWoods Flake, Matured Virginia No.25 and No. 27 (and many more) Dunhill Flake Cornell & Diehl Opening Night

What makes a VA or Vap a VA

As you say, many blends have a foundation of Va. - English mixtures being a classic example. However, when folks refer to just a Va., they mean a blend of Virginia leaf used straight without mixing with other tobacco's; may be a single strain or may be a blend of leaves from different strains...

    Dunhill Pipes

"In the golden age Pipes were big business. It's a modern phenomenon to attach shoddy workmanship to factories and revere cottage craftsman. Barling, Dunhill, GBD, Comoy's...these weren't guys in their garages, these were enormous factories employing ground breaking technology to make the pipes...

    Dunhill Pipes

Back in the days of English pipemakers, Dunhill was only one of many excellent brands (Charatan, Loewe, Barling, Comoy etc.) but by good marketing and a policy of acquisition, became the most famous. Coupled with the fact that they can be accurately dated, they have achieved cult status and most...

Is there a Dunhill Flake equivalent ?

@ ericusrex: "I thought Mac Baren made Capstan and Orlik made Dunhill. Am I wrong.....................again?" Perfectly correct nowadays but it was by STG until 2013 (I think) and that is their tin - haven't tried the later ones. I believe there is now an STG equivalent under another name?

    Blended Scotch Suggestions

Difficult to say which is best as they taste differently depending on the base malts used in the blend - White Horse uses Lagavulin, Johnny Walker uses Cardhu, for example - very different. I agree with Peck that Chivas Regal is one of the best (but one of the most expensive) as it is a blend of...
