My three rules of pipe smoking

Here are my three simple rules, that assure me a pleasant pipe smoke: 1. Smoke dryer than you think 2. Pack lighter than you think 3. Puff less than you think Nothing new and groundbreaking. I just wanted to share because I did all of them wrong first and that gave me plenty of bad smoking...

    Wellauer dunhill replacements

Visiting the Wellauer tobacconist in St Gallen (CH) (http://www.welltabac.ch/wellauers-pfeifentabak/) I discovered, that they now have copied the whole range of the dunhill blends. Got me some 965 and give my impression here.

    Solani Gold

I just recently tried this blend and I really really like it. Halas, as we well know, Syrian Latakia is no longer produced and therefore it seems, that this wonderful tobacco will not continue to be produced for long, at least not in its actual composition. In fact I suspect, that production has...

    Relighting a Cold Bowl?

If, for some reason, I can’t finish a bowl I generally ream it out because for some reason I don’t like the taste of a relit pipe after it has cooled down. I often have relight trough a bowl and as long as the time between two relights is not too long this is fine but it tastes flat and ashy to...

How Long Does Your Bowl Last

A size 4 Dunhill bowl, easily packed, 2mm under the rim, with a ribbon cut English mixture gets me about 1.5-2 hours of smoke, when I smoke it to the bottom, a small lump of charred tobacco left. What about you? Edited by jvnshr: Title capitalization (please check Rule #9)

    Seduced by three sisters

I cannot count how many times I came short during the years of buying a tin of three nuns at my local tobacconist. Two days ago, encouraged by Bradleys YouTube review I finally got me some. Man, what did I miss all these years! This stuff is just fantastic. Ok, I know that this isn't Tolkien's...

Best Tobacco in Hot and Humid (Tropical) Climate

I will travel to Thailand in three weeks. It's Monsoon season over there which means very hot and humid weather. I was thinking to take something light and mellow such as EMP, Presbyterian or London Mixture. What think you!

    What's the matter with Synjeco

I attempted to make an order by mail. No response. Attempted a second time. No response. Mailed to Daniel directly. No answer. No actual news since spring on their website. It's weird. Customer service always was top notch with them.

Bent shapes are growing on me

Up to now I found bent pipes unattractive. I found them looking grandfatherly and was staying clear of them. The only bent shape I owned so far is a Dunhill half bent dublin. But suddenly I like them more and more. To complete my Dunhill collection a bent saddle billard with a bruyère finish is...

    David off Royalty

Another tobacco I tried to find a suitable replacement for my favorite but unfortunately doomed Dunhill blends. I haven't quite made up my mind about it. It's a pleasant mild English blend that is dominated by high quality virginias and orientals with Latakia as a minor player. I hate the ill...

    Dissapointed by Squadron Leader

On my quest for Dunhill substitutes and encouraged by all the good reviews I tried SL again. Tried it for the first time last year. I remember it as a very light blend. Rather underwhelming. At opening the tin I already knew this would be a disappointment again. Confirming my last year...

    Dunhill Substitutes

The Dunhill english mixtures are my favorites by far and since it seems that they are doomed I must find replacements. What are your suggestions for the following blends: - EMP - London - Standart - 965 - Nightcap

What is your after smoking pipe cleaning routine

What do you do to keep your pipes pretty and sweet tasting? I pass a pipe cleaner through the stem (obviously), wipe the inside of the bowl with a towel and put some grease on bowl and stem. Would you say this is enough? Too much?

    DGT

I read in another forum that putting aside an unfinished bowl and relighting it later (delayed gratification technique) may improve the smoke. I experienced the exact opposite the few times I did it. Relithing an unfinished bowl some hours later or longer gave me an ashy aroma with much less...

    Yenidje Highlander?

I wanted to taste the flavor of this fabled Queen of Tobaccos and purchazed some Mc Clellands Yenidje Highlander (Yenidje supreme was not available). I was rather dissapointed. All I tasted was (high quality and tasty) VA but almost nothing else. Even the Latakia was almost completely hidden by...

    The white knight hurts me

White Knight is one of my favourite balkan blends but it gives me a bad case of tongue bite almost each time. I do not have this problem with other strong/balkan/english blends such as Abingdon or Nightcap. It comes rather dry and I have already tried to moisten it a bit, but that does not...

    SPC blends

I've just been delivered, courtesy of 4noggins, 3 large tins of SPC blends that I bought blind (I sometimes do stupid things like that). I tried Poltlatch yesterday and I liked it. A nice American english with a burley twist. Which one of the two remaining blends should I try next? Plum pudding...

Describe me the flavor of "orientals"

I always associated the underlying subtle sweetness of an English blend to orientals but realize that I was wrong and that sweetness is rather due to virginias whereas most reviewers commonly attribute spicyness to orientals. This confuses me. Supposedly EMP has a high oriental content and this...

    London vs Standard Mixture

The Standard Mixture is currently my favorite Dunhill blend. I remember having enjoyed London some 15 years back. Is the Orlik remake any good? How does it compare to Standard? I'm pretty disappointed by the current 975, which was some of my favorites back then and wanted some advice before...
