    Ken Barnes Passed Away?

Such sad news. Ken was so kind, enthusiastic, talented, generous and thoughtful -- what an extraordinary man he was! I'll never forget when he gave me a tour of London streets, showing me where various pipe shops of old had been located. Visiting his house in Cornwall was special, too, which I...

    Peterson System Gurgling

I used to agree with the sentiment expressed in your question, and I made that point in my first book. But over the years -- unless the mouthpiece is extremely tight -- I have found it much less important than opening the shank to between 4.0 mm and 4.5 mm. That will solve the gurgling problem...

    Peterson System Gurgling

Make sure the shank is drilled to a width of 5/32" and smoke tobacco that is crispy on the outside and slightly cold (which means moist) on the inside. I talk about these things in my books. Guaranteed -- this will stop the gurgling. Any pipe maker or repair person can open the shank for you in...

    Micro Reamers

No, but I just Googled their pictures and, once again, I would be terrified to use either one inside my pipe bowls. Trust me, I am not skilled for that type of scraping. This Micro Reamer without the screw is perfect for me. I was only wondering if anyone was making them any more, but the answer...

    Micro Reamers

I was replying to sandollars' suggestion of using a bristled cleaner, and not embers' suggestion to use a knife. To embers ... I am sure you are much more skilled than I am to be able to use that knife. I would ruin the bowl if I tried. (I know from experience.)

    Micro Reamers

That is exactly what I did for 20 years, as recommended by Jim Benjamin, but once I found this very gentle reamer, it removes just the slightest amount of build-up and is very gentle inside the bowl, at least the way I use it. It removes it better than a bristled cleaner. The blades are not...

    Micro Reamers

That's what makes horse races :)

    Micro Reamers

I removed the screw so long ago that I forgot to mention that. I find these reamers are ideal for removing the cake exactly as it builds up -- more on the bottom and less on the top, leaving the inside of the bowl smooth from top to bottom.

    Micro Reamers

Yes, that's it. So ... where can we get them, or is there someone who might be interested in making them? I don't like a cake, so I use it after each smoke, and it fits inside all of my pipes, big and small. Have you tried it?

    Micro Reamers

A package of eight, not six. They are very good for keeping previously-reamed bowls clean; they are not strong enough to cut through an old cake that has been built up for years.

    Micro Reamers

Does anyone know anything about Micro Reamers? I bought a package of six from Bruce Weaver years ago and wonder if there is a comparable product made today.

    Broken Pipe: Bruce Weaver

This is too sad. Bruce had become an excellent pipe maker over the years, and he was one of the nicest, most decent people in our hobby. I am in shock, and I will pray for his family and friends.

FDA Begins Unannounced Inspections of Pipe Makers

If you were a pipe maker, would you register? In the end, you would have no choice if you live in the United States. I assume you pay taxes. Why do you do that? You might hate it, but if you choose to be an American, you are obligated to register with the IRS. Same with the FDA and its crazy...

FDA Begins Unannounced Inspections of Pipe Makers

I think the main thing we can do is to shine a spotlight on the FDA's unauthorized over-reach, which is why I am so enthusiastic about Sheldon Richman's article. This is actually the third in a series of columns he has written about how the FDA is harming consumers of tobacco. The fact that his...

FDA Begins Unannounced Inspections of Pipe Makers

Sheldon Richman's article was brilliant and a major contribution to our understanding of how the FDA is calling pipes a "component of tobacco," when they are not. They are vessels for consuming tobacco, just like coffee cups are vessels for consuming coffee. Cosmic fails to grasp the...

    Help Identifying Antique Tobacco Jars

I paid $125 for each tin, which was what the store told me they paid nearly 20 years ago.

    Help Identifying Antique Tobacco Jars

Thanks so much, Jon, and everyone else in this thread. I have been a fan of pipesmagazine.com from the start, but this story illustrates how game-changing these forums are for the collecting community. So many readers have knowledge and are willing to share it -- I am just in awe of this forum...

    Help Identifying Antique Tobacco Jars

OMG!!! I have been searching the internet and asking old-time pipe historians for days and it took less than a few minutes to find the answer once Kevin Godbee posted my inquiry! (With all due respect to the old-timers -- they did give me a lot of interesting tips and tidbits of information)...

    Cornell & Diehl - "Exclusive"

I really like this blend for a change of pace. Nineteen bowls out of 20 for me are English (i.e., with Latakia) and the 20th bowl will be C&D's Exclusive. It tastes sweet and tangy to me. I have tried various forms of Escudo but this is the only version that I really like.
