I bought one years ago. It was not only unfinished but not fit to be finished. One side of it had a huge flaw that was filled in. Many other spots also filled. It also was not drilled all that good. Very tight. To me it was a sold off rather than burned. Of course the ones now offered may be...
I agree with xrundog. I will not modify an artisan pipe in any way, but a factory pipe is another thing. Having said that, I look at my rack of hand made pipes and don't think that any of them would have needed to be opened in the first place.
Did you clean the pipe or your house? Make sure you clean the pipe including wiping the inside of the bowl. I can smell the pipes in my rack when I am right next to them but not from a few feet away and they have never stunk up my entire house.
Use the micro-mesh pads as suggested but I have a feeling the stem will end up being one that turns at the sight of you lips so give it some good protection after it is smooth and black. Some Paragon wax, Obsidian oil or some plain old olive oil.
If you can figure this out you can sell your solution to pipe makers throughout the world. When I say a bad smoking pipe, I am talking about a pipe that tastes bad or smokes hot as a blow torch no matter what you do. To me this is a wood problem and you can't fix bad wood.
The charring light is the only problem I have with a Zippo so I use Bic or an Old Boy for that then go on to the Zippo. You can get some pretty fancy looking Zippo cases to upgrade to.
I have an 824 KS. It's a beautiful pipe. I got it at a trunk show years go. The Savinelli rep hand picked the pipes that he brought. This one had zero fills and a nice grain. I have 10 Savs and this one is the worse smoker. Smokes a little hot and wet.
Bad pipes I have owned: Several that smoked hot no matter what tobacco, how it's packed or how slow it is smoked. A wood problem in my mind. One that tasted harsh with a weird after taste even after trying to smoke my way out of it for 2 years. Again, the wood.
